Shades drawn to hide from sight; As unseen demons cast their light; Seeking to catch me unaware; I can't find rest from their hellish stare; My tears flow free from unhealed sorrow; Fighting night terror, till the dawn of tomorrow; Wounded soul lies raw and bare; As I endure this nightly affair; As unseen eyes watch through the night; I pray for solace to ease my fright.

Out Of The Darkness

Things are not always clearer, even after you've stepped out of the darkness.

I wake on my left side, shivering from the cold. I fumble for the comforter but come up empty-handed. Annoyed, I roll onto my back thinking I'll have to wrestle it from Ben, my blanket-stealing husband who likes to wrap himself in a cocoon. Instead of feeling his warm body, I find only space, as my hand drops to a cool, hard surface covered in what feels like small wood shavings.Confusion blurs my memory. Gradually, the v...

Fading Ink - A Mother's Memoir

Though the ink has faded with time, the memory will always remain sharp and clear.

It was Halloween weekend, just a little over two months before Katy passed away and we were spending it in one of Katy's favorite places. Asheville, North Carolina, about 100 miles from our home. My mother was in town from Florida, and my eldest sister had taken a flight in just a few days prior, from California. After we had dinner that Halloween night, the four of us were making our way along the crowded sidewalk. My mo...

There's a pain I have inside; I try so hard to hide;I hold on tight and bury it deep; But there's just so long that it will keep; Then in a flash the tears flow free; And continue till they empty me;I'm left as lifeless as an old rag doll;Exhausted and worn till I'm nothing at all.

The shame upon your face as you turned and walked away, spoke silently in volumes of the things you could not say; You'd finally given up, thought you'd fought a valiant fight; Our marriage just a casualty of the battles in the night; The vows we shared as one, hope-filled dreams and happy tears; Could not withstand the distance that grew with passing years; Awkward strangers once again, we went our separate ways; Each ho...

If you ask me who I love, this is what I'll say;The man whose love for me, grows deeper every day;The man who knows the thoughts, deep within my mind; The man who can be so stubborn, but is more often so very kind; This man calls me his Little Bird, I call him Honeybee; He's the holder of my heart and the only one for me.

Ascension

Ascend the stairs into the Light

Such a load she had to bear, unbeatable pain was always there; She was so brave and dignified; despite it all, she seldom cried; When told she wouldn't make it through, she insisted there was more to do;She wasn't ready to give in yet; stronger chemo was her bet;She had such plans; she had to live; continue fighting so she could give, the world her love and heart and soul; To beat the demon was her goal; Our Lord had differen...

Center Stage

Acceptance is the key to win the war on hate.

Love comes in many forms, more than meet the eye; Some are quite accepted, while others vilified; But who are we to judge, what we do not know? The feelings of the heart are beyond what we control;I empathize with any, who must live with the plight; To love who they wish, which is their given right; We must be more accepting and end all forms of hate;Even if with baby steps, begin today, don't wait;Open up your heart and mind;...

Jesus leads me through the darkness into the light of day;  If holding my hand is not enough, he carries me all the way; He always knows just what I need in times of joy or sorrow; So, I'll follow him day to day, as he lights the path of each tomorrow.

A babblin' brook meanders by as I gaze upon a cloudless sky;Lyin' on the grassy shore, tis nary a thin' I treasure more;A breeze blows softly thru yonder trees settin' my troubled heart at ease;Tis so soothin' to unwind, leavin' my worries far behind; If only for a brief sojourn in a land where dreams are born;My mind wanders to bygone days and joyful adventures along the way; I ponder melodic notes I hear as a tiny song...

To Love ...Is to share the good and the bad,the joy and the sorrow, sad days and the glad;To Love ...Is to give again,to please and to pamper, such joy it will bring; To Love ...is to forgivethe large and the small, instead of recall; To Love ...Is to lose something precious and dear, yet gracefully give it up without even a tear. Note: This poem was written and submitted for publication in a small local newsletter by Katy with...
