I write because I have to. Whether it is to release emotions, or to record events, or to technically document and instruct, I have to. I am a natural teacher. Teacher's need to write as well as read. I do mostly solid real world related stuff, but I can dabble in fantasy to release my imagination. I also am a natural show off and getting the words out there is the "kick" that drives me on.
Very instructive. I write some poetry so this applies. I have never been taught this except possibly years ago in Intro To Lit. in high school. In all honesty I never read poetry so learn by see doesn't work either. I really appreciate your sharing.
I won't post anything I don't like. I haven't written much just been immersed in the world of writing all my life. Like being caught in a whirl pool and not noticing anything besides going round and round.

I do rewrites, more now than ever. But I do just let the story flow out and that is it. This especially true of my poetry. I will sometimes rework a poem to death and that usually means trash it.

I like this thread. I think one learns more from the feed back of peers who are both readers and writers is extremely valuable. SS also has a very healthy climate for open criticism without it being a personal attack and that makes for a great safe zone to sort of float a new idea or style to see what happens.3dT2Iv3rpKcszsIt
I would be very careful of using them. If it is in time context perhaps as it helps lock in the time setting. However, I think over time they lose their meaning. This makes it difficult for future readers to grasp the meaning. Sort of like trying to read Chaucer in the original Middle English.
I grew up in a reading and writing family. Dad was a reporter, editor, and freelance photo journalist. His degree was in a dual discipline of Agricultural Journalism. I have pictures of me at 18 month's helping Dad write.

Later writing was a school chore and I didn't care for it as I had to conform to rules and styles. What I did write was praised but I was never motivated.

I am now motivated as writing is the means to the end of sharing my life experiences. I can also document family events and incidents for future generations. I found during my fling at genealogy that you can find the sequence but rarely get a real glimpse into thee lives and personalities of your ancestors. I intend to change that for my branch of the family.

I do enjoy poetry, songs, and fantasy as personal fun.
In college I had to learn a technique I called "terse verse" which was basically to eliminate these 5 error's. BTW my father was a news paper editor and he taught me to avoid all of these as variations on "fluff". I only partially agree about the use of proper names. It can easily be part of a particular character's persona and personality, in which case it is actually required.

I personally don't agree with the blank line change. Perhaps this is a new standard in writing but I have been pounded in class for using it. Has this changed? For me it breaks the flow of the type and therefore the story.

There are also pieces of poetry or descriptive essay type writing in which painting word pictures using hyper rich adjective language is perfectly acceptable. If your intent is to bring the reader's senses into focus on the story, not just their mind, this works well. If it is not a needed part of the story, kill it for G... sake! it just puts readers to sleep and they close out, never finishing the story.

These are very good pointers for rough draft editing and in the main I do agree. Any feed back?

My brother-in-law Rolandlytle knew me back in my heavy reading days and enticed me into it.Zz4HwlzDw9GHM3cB

I have always been a dabbling writer and want to do a serious digital self publish of a biographic piece I have been working some years on. I needed a "test"site where I could run some trial writing past reader/writers, an audience I consider to be the toughest one to please.

So far I am really enjoying reading as much as writing.
Hi I'm Vern Fawcett. I'm Roland Lytle's brother-in-law (sob). My best writing is short humorous stories. RL is A OK, after all he has put up with me for 40 plus years now.
