Back of the line, back of the line. speeding again so here I am at the end of the line.
I recently started a serial and have found it takes about a week to do 4-7000 words. I do it all on PC so rough draft vs. edit is sort of simultaneous. I usually proof, edit and revise as I go, then take 2 days for full grammar check (Blasted comma's) missing words, wrong word wright sound etc. This is working about 3 to 4 hours a day. It is a memoir so research is minimal.
I too would like to know this. As I have tried to use it I can link backwards but not forwards.
When I read Lowenna Chapters 1-35 it was murderous hard. I had to go to RBO's story list after each part to find the forward thread. If I was a casual reader I would gone by chapter 2.
The dialog to fix this exists but it makes you resubmit and re-verify, something our moderators are just dancing with joy to do for such a simple change I'm sure.
I am aware you can't link to future phantoms, except in some of our stories, the link check box is actually perfectly backwards and useless. Why have it if you can't use it efficiently?
I agree this feature is mysterious and seems to me to be anti-friendly. My observation is that it overrides both on/offline to be always on even if you aren't. It also overrides invisibility (which I think was the original intent). Looks like a code bug to me where a value is nested and turning it on/off was put at the wrong level. I would like to know the purpose and desired behavior.
Welcome to Stories Space, often known as SS (So Silly, Seriously Suave, Sloppy Soup, Slippery Slope, So Serious, Sublime Savoring) . We are a friendly group. Some seriously good writers and some avid readers. I have been inspired and I hope you will be as well.
at the moment Frog Prince and rbo. I can read a Piers Anthony over and over and never get tired of it. Asimov is such a deep thinker. Niven brings new situations and creatures to life... I could go on.
I started early listening to my mom read to me. When I began to read on my own I found a wide open world to travel and experience. I read with more purpose now. Sometimes you just need some bubble gum to chew for fun, other times a deep dive into thought.
I also read as a conversation among millions and across time. I can share the thoughts of those who have devoted lifetimes to a subject and by writing back my thoughts are now fish in the pool waiting to be caught.
I love to taken away by a good writer to strange worlds and strange times and places, it feeds me to grow as well.
In case the watchers need watching, I'll hold down the end of the line.
Nope there's the end of the line!
Nope there's the end of the line!

Welcome to Storiesspace. I'm kind of new here to and having a great experience so I'm sure you can too. I've yet to meet the curmudgeons but Merideth has been around longer than me. Looking forward to some good reads and comments too.
Computer fan whine in a dead quiet house.
Depends on the story and purpose. I try to just let it flow start to finish about an hour or two. I detest editing but I do mainly mechanics and grammar repair, no story changes, for a short. This, even with aids, is a day or so.
I seldom write for formal publishing unless it is business related, so I only do a rough draft. In college I had an English 202 prof. who wanted 3 page essays (hand written thankfully) rough draft and final in 1 hour. I learned to do this well enough for an A but it hurt at first.
I find it interesting to read this thread and see the different ways each person creates and spins the cloth of their words into a story. BTW this took me about 15 minutes.
The only possible reason I can see is to provide a potential Rosetta stone for future readers to be able to understand the context and intent. I totally concur withe Rolandlytle.
From my experience website visitation is as important as joining. That is controlled by 3 major factors. 1. changes. Most social gadflies who could become members monitor for site changes, new features, back end design etc. This is the site owners/designers job. It has to change at least every 2 weeks and requires some dedicated people to continually work on it under supervision of the aforementioned. 2. Meaningful content. Content has to available, interesting, purposeful. 3. Activities. Contests, forums, chat rooms, quizzes, puzzles etc. All these need to be site oriented and of different degrees of difficulty. There should be open activities and member exclusives. I can't speak to reads only but as a writer I can tell you writers crave attention and feed back. I would work to encourage better comments which include some aspect of technique as well as content. Writers need to become thicker skinned and readers need to become more willing to critique. overall we do very well here but tolerance is golden especially among writers and readers. We also somehow flood readers with too many stories. It might help to separate the book serials from the individual stories. Just a thought. A site redesign would need to be done for this. A navigation change to offer a choice of the different categories boiled down would be the first page and then branch from there. These are just suggestions. I really like the site as it is It has encouraged me greatly to take up writing again and also provided validation from people who are not just your personal friends. I would hate to see the site die off, or become a numbers game just to brag on. Quality is more important to me.
Noticed I hadn't revealed much about myself so I am adding this.

I am very wordy and pretty chatty Cathy. In other words a real needy clingy attention hog so if I am annoying please be blunt:I don't even notice hints, sorry, it won't hurt my feelings to be slapped down a little bit.
