I did not fall from the sky
Like night falls softly upon a hopeful land,
Filling it with a taut darkness.
Nor did I descend like a storm,
Crashing with untamed rectitude
Onto a land lost to its own desires.
I did not blow in on a temperate breeze;
Blowing hither and thither,
Swaying like a branch in a storm;
Allowing it to carry me trustingly
Until I settle lightly, carelessly,
Upon verdant fields of ill gotten freedom.
Instead, the ground trembled in anticipation as
My spirit rose with a deep rumbling
From beneath the barren sands
Of a worn away world.
Breathing in life as I passed across
The unconquered threshold of grace.
My soul marked by the moon,
Untouched by blood,
My magic unwritten,
Constant as mercury.
The heavy beatings of my heart
A rhythm for my feet to march to.
Like the unrelenting ocean,
Ever changing as tides that crash upon the shore,
Silvery stars dancing across my waters
As the whitecaps erupt and roll
Bringing unfettered reflections of light,
Mystery and beauty in every hue.
Laying myself down on virgin sands
Briny waters flowing around me
To purge my body, as well as my soul.
And when the waves roll back,
They will leave my shape upon the sand
As proof of my spirit’s marriage to the earth.
As you try to beat my heart to death with hypocrisy,
My head will not be bowed.
Nor will you find me hiding in the shadows.
The light of passion shining upon my face
As I rise to a whole new height,
Dignity and unselfish love my weapons of choice.
I may not always be a strong woman,
But I am a woman of strength,
And that is my saving grace.
Like night falls softly upon a hopeful land,
Filling it with a taut darkness.
