Solar whoa

When the lights go out

Our power went out this morning. We received a text from a friend asking if we had power. No, ours is off. The friend said his went off mid-perk on the coffee pot. I said to my husband, "he has gone solar; how is he out?" My husband asked, getting the reply that Duke Energy hasn't hooked up his solar yet.

Brother Sun And Sister Moon

The elusive effect the Sun and Moon has on our lives

Oh brother Sun your radiant rays, they warm and cheer in many ways, to brown the skin and strengthen bone, our bodies crave for you alone. We need to see you in the sky to reassure us hope is there, when clouds hide you we do despair. Your essence is a potent part of why we hold passion in our heart. You greet us and bid us farewell, with golden rays you weave a spell, caress our heart and bodies too and return next day,...

In comes the wind and Illuminati touching my skin sleeping naked in unadorned metaphors echoing serenity no time for gauchos or cowboys on the Pampas escaping the whispers of makers and takers and near-illiterate listening to the sounds as the coffee drips embracing my reincarnation in comes the wind and Illuminati.

Staying Alive

Aging man reviews life's chances

Hospitals have always made me uneasy, and that was only when visiting. Now, here I was, a patient, and breathing easy. Not allowed to get up yet, though. They don’t half fuss over me. “You’re a special case, Mr Fuller,” the nurses keep saying. Doctors, who come and check me over, have said that too. But my darling Helen, bless her, says I’ve always been a special case to her. I just wish I wasn’t putting her through all t...

So, I heard the news. It's not the best one to know but maybe the hardest to digest. I knew this would happen, just not this soon. Not now. I have built an invisible wall between us. I made it thick and strong. I ensured nothing will ever break it, not even the most painful memory of yesterday. But it proved me otherwise today. I was wrong. In many countless ways, I am undeniably wrong for that wall suddenly crumbled down...

Simply the Best

A rose is forever

Moving into our bungalow over thirty years ago we found that the front lawn had a variety of standard willow as a centre piece. For the first three years, the tree developed vigorously, its head getting wider and wider. No flowers, just musky green leaves. Quite ugly, we thought, and resolved to replace it. With what? That was the next question. We finally decided, given its central position, and our desire to have a flor...

Time Stands Still For No One

Thoughts on growing old.

I am related by marriage to one of the big old Birmingham UK families, and at any family event, there are always aunts and uncles, cousins, and nephews, and nieces to catch up with. This afternoon, I attended a family funeral, and as is always the case it was a big family gathering. At the wake after the funeral, I mingled, chatted, and caught up with all the relatives there. Cousins, nephews and nieces, and friends and n...

What Gives You The Right

My rambling thoughts...

What gives you the right to assume I’m DTF? That’s Down To… Well, you can look it up. I assure you I’m not. Perhaps after some time, some long time, and a bonding friendship built of courting and a heavy dose of flirting. Yes, I said courting. People don’t court anymore and they should, but that’s a rant for another time. What gives you the right to assume that I want to be touched? I don’t walk by you with the joy of hav...

His eyes were curious, his ears inquisitive. I wondered if he was a fan of Taylor Swift or if the sound of the ukulele touched at some primal memory. Or, maybe like me, he just liked the sound of the small waterfall that cascaded down the smooth time-worn granite on the other side of the creek. Maybe this was where he, like me, came to be alone with his thoughts. It had been a fluke discovering this place. One of the last...

The Voice of My Hair

Life's Coping Mechanisms

The other day I stared into the mirror looking at my receding hairline and feeling I could have done with some better genes and some better hair maybe? But then I stopped and shut my eyes... One thought led to the other and took me down a rabbit hole of time, back many years, to that barber on my street who used to give me a cut for Rs.11/-. The barber's shop wasn't very big and had room for a tiny bench behind the cuttin...

Getting A Little Heiny

Sometimes we’ve done a better job than we think we’re doing…

Camping. Love it or hate it, it sucks. Rainy tent erection. Sucks. Boisterous drunken neighbours. Sucks. Mosquitoes. Every single one of them sucks. What doesn’t suck are the shared lasting memories that are both measurable and immeasurable. The indelible ties that bind. The best of which involve firsts. This year, in the shadow and under the stars of our glorious Rocky Mountains, we shared a beer. And not just any beer,...

BillySoho

Crashing guitars on a summer night. You can’t beat it. The boy’s bashing his guitar for all he’s worth. He’s really battering it. I’m taking a break from socialising, leaning at the bar with an ice cold beer in my hands, enjoying the show. We’re in the heady confines of the local Constitutional Club, watching Josh’s friend’s band, The Shots do their thing. Josh is at the front, cheering them on. I’ve been looking forward...
