Flash Fiction Stories

Flash fiction stories vary in length from anywhere between one hundred to one thousand words.

The aim of flash fiction is to ensure every word is absolutely necessary.

Stories in this category can cover any of the fiction genres, the challenge being to engage the reader and tell a complete story within a limited number of words.

If I were China …and I had power …I think about this thought a lot. If I were China and I conquered the world …and things went the way I planned …nevermind, I sound like a comic book villain now. …but if I had my way All the factories that put cows in boxes would go away And the plains would be for bison and wolves …and for the cowboys brave enough to live there If I were China, I’d be mean too Back in 1900 they imported...

I waded through pink and white sweet pea blossoms And through tall wide bladed razor grass Until I stood in the muddy water Where the weapons of our warfare grew I chose one for my worthy opponent With a brown fuzzy hilt and a long green blade And one for me, short Very short to make things fair My little cousin Jazra wasn’t three yet And she swung the long cattail around the yard She was Captain Hook And she laughed as t...

White-trunked paper bark birch trees lined Duncan Street. Little golden spots of light wiggled through the dancing leaves. I was so happy to move onto the only pretty street in Killeen, Texas. My car broke down, and I decided to walk to church. Car after car pulled over, and men kept, well . . . umm . . . blush . . . Duncan Street was where Johns and walkers met up, more-so than all the rest of Killeen. On my drive to wor...

Saturday Groceries

I hate Saturday shopping.

I have somehow gotten myself on a schedule of Saturday grocery shopping, so tomorrow, I'll pick up a pie crust or two, and cook up the rest of the rhubarb puree in a pie. I'm just gonna get enough stuff to get me through until Wednesday or so, because I hate grocery shopping on screaming child day. They meet you at the door you know, and if you don't have one ... well, it's like this: (Cue ominous organ chord, fade out, a...

Delicate and Bitter

Be warned of the quiet of winter my child, for it enraptures the soul like none other.

If you were quiet enough, you might hear the heartbeat of each flake as it hits its sea of brethren. You could be so light of foot that you might sense the shiver of the snow itself, nestling into the crevasses and nooks of every tree and root. So cold you would be that the breath in front of your face would no longer obscure your vision, its warmth a clash of two dichotomies, the complex construction of frozen atoms, and...

the dead parrot

a sequel to A Scientist and a Dead Bird

Yoro, the leader of the controlling particle, tapped his fingers on his desk. He had read the reports and they didn’t look good. There was kidney failure caused by all the Doritos he’d let the parrot eat. There were heart problems, and an aneurysm forming. The whole body was in acute pain, and needed to be shut down. Doritos are yummy. Are they worth it? “It looks bad.” Bjork, his second, said. “I’m going to miss this. It...

A Random Moment, Part 20: Amy and Gloria Talk

Are the answers just more questions?

As Gloria pulled into her driveway, she dreaded the conversation which was to follow. Amy was talking to her as if nothing had happened, but everyone was aware that something was going on. Gloria only had a faint idea, but it was enough to make her suspicious. “Amy, come in, have a seat. Can I get you anything?” Gloria offered.“No, I’m fine, let’s just get to talking, shall we?”“Business, eh?”“Something like that.”A chill...

I rose above the clouds in an instance of triumph, basking in the sound of pure honor and majesty. It all surrounded me in one moment of glory. Wings made of light and wind emerged from my back, setting me free, and my eyes saw the world below. I could see everything. It would have been perfect if not for the next instant I was pricked by the needle of fate and banished to the depths of hell to live out a lonely immortali...

I can see her out of the corner of my eye, but she doesn’t realize it. Maybe she does, actually, now that I reflect on it; but it’s an unspoken rule that she speaks first, and that I answer the inevitable with an air of surprise. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine.” There it is. There it is again, the one question that no matter what day of the week it is or what month or year or even how I’m feeling; I will always lie to the ques...

Miss Christie

It just isn't the same...

"They look like ants, bustling around out there," she mutters to herself as she looks out the window, down to the city below. Turning away, she finishes getting ready for her show, the final touch will come right before entering on stage right. There's a knock at the door, "Miss Christie, you have two minutes," and I remember my first performance at age twelve. I was shaking, my face flushed pink with nervousness, my hand...

Melanie's New Muse

Melanie, Sophie's sister, is now an author...

The trees are so beautiful this time of year- frosted with snow like a sprinkling of powdered sugar. "Too bad it is too cold to go out," Melanie whispers to herself, backing her chair away from the window and her computer desk to instead sit, uncluttered, at the center of the room. There's a crash somewhere outside and she is taken back to the crash and crunch the day Sophie fell... But she blocks out that day and walks t...

The Wait

An Assigned Write from Creative Writing, written today, eleven sentences, piece by piece...

The bus rolled up and opened its doors like a slug sliming up a leaf. I could walk 25 miles to Seattle before the driver even put on his blinker to alert car drivers he was parking there. There are other days I would complain about this, ranting without end, but today I am in no hurry and today there is a puddle of squishy, green, glittering goo all along the side of the road--at least with his pace and precise parking, I...

Mandy's Failed Escape

The beginning can almost be sung to the tune of Leaving On a Jet Plane...

Her bags are packed, she's ready to go, so she wonders out the door and into the snow. *** The frosty air hits first, and almost instantly she can feel her face is pink with cold, but her feet won't stop moving towards the bus stop--not that she'd stop them; not that she wants to stop them. The bus doors open and she smiles a small smile until she realizes she doesn't have enough to get away. Her lower lip trembles as she...
