Have you tried just looking for a random image and writing a story around the picture? Like a "Cabin in the Woods", "Sad Clown", "Play Grounds", "Waterfalls", "Clocks" or "Moonlight on Water". Perhaps looking at some of the images that are posted in the forums might help. I certain there might be a story in some of them.....

I shall give it a try. Thank you hun
That's good advice, James, I like it.

Justine, you could also try picking a category you haven't yet written a story in, one you don't necessarily think about or read, even.

Or write a meditation on the problem, give vent to the writer's block, a musing on the frustration of the problem. Who knows, facing it head-on like that might kick it to the curb and you can get beyond it.

Sadly, I'm not much help, I think my writer's block has taken up permanent residence. If you find a solution, share it here, please, and good luck.

I shall, thank you so much Gypsy!
Life is all around you. Take a walk. Sit on a bench. Watch people. Take random pics with your phone. Sometimes my best thoughts come to me while I'm driving and a panorama of topics whisk by my windows.
what about a childhood memory or a illness that touched your heart, or a dream you have or want..
you are such a good writer I feel it is you that should be helping me.
I'm having the annoying problem of being able to think of things to write, but physically unable to write them. Most of you know why, but for those who don't: Peripheral neuropathy, about which I'll say no more. Anyway, to get over writers block, I usually just write. I know, it sounds nuts, but half (at least) of my ideas go nowhere, anyway, so just writing them out, even if it's a fleeting thought, can help. Thinking of rhyming words can help, too. You really just need to get your mind off the idea of having writers block. You could try replacing lyrics with your own made up ones. It doesn't really matter if the writing is crap, so long as you're getting ideas out there. Some will end in nothing, but you can always recycle ideas, or you could revisit old stories.

I'm having the same problem, Andrew. That's why I haven't been on here for awhile. Hopefully some answers this week.
Justine, the same problem has hit me hard at various times. One thing I do is read the news and frame a flash fiction piece around an item that piques my interest. Another tactic is to write a fictional account based on something that happens during your day.

For example, "Divine Justice" is based on an item in the news, while "The Virtue of Patience" is loosely based on an actual occurrence.

Oh, and yet another way I've tricked myself into writing is to jot down as many six-word stories as you can think of, then build longer stories around your favorites. "The Assignment," "No Big Deal," "The Wait" and "It's Over" resulted from that technique.

Good luck!

Hi, I hope you have broken through. If not, try this...

Write a letter to something, anything, anyone... telling it/them what you think of them. Like. Love. Hate. Makes you laugh. Whatever. Anything.

Maybe you write to a body part.

"Dearest butt. I hate you and your big ass attitude!"

Keep it light and funny, if you can. Just put words down. Baby steps.

Best of luck!

It seems too simple but it all starts with one word. Then another then another. Doesn't have to even make sense at first. The easiest start is just to write down a pity party about writer's block. Maybe just a list. Just remember there are lots of us who have had the same trouble and we are pulling for you. I can assure you it isn't permanent, just feels bad while you're there.
May your parchment be smooth, your ink never blot, and your writing never block.
Thank you all for responding. I think I have something. Fingers crossed.
I have did it. I decide to stick with memoirs for now. It helping me to clear my head and take some frustrations out. As ping said baby steps!

Just finished your memoir and it was very insightful.
You can't get there from here, because when you get there you're still here and here is now there.

You write so well, things must be serious. If it helps, I have just broken a long spell of the dreaded block. I ran round in circles and circles looking for inspiration and eventually, instead of giving up for the umpteenth time I read a quotqtion that said "Are you a writer or a waiter? Because if you are not writing you are just a waiter!". I'm in LA at the moment and that quotation is soooo apt.

So I found someone who I like and collaborated, for the first time ever. We wrote a poem together which people seem to like.

I then sat down and forced myself to write several, off the cuff, pieces on my own. First two were horrid and are somewhere in landfill. But two were good enough to be published and I finally got around to finishing one of the stories I have had lying around. Bet you have some of those?.

Hope this helps.

Writers write! ... remember...

Well I should check the dates on posts before sounding off.

Perhaps my post might help another?. Hope so.

Sweat it not, Hayley. As you pointed out, your post might help others. With traffic being a tad slow, subject matter is way more important than any posting date.

Your post reminded me of "Writing Down the Bones" by, Natalie Goldberg, the world's only Jewish, Zen Master, writing coach...probably. In it, she gives some original suggestions for unblocking and freeing the 'inner' writer.

What helped me was another hobby I took up, photography. Once I began looking at the pictures I shot, a few words started to marinate in my mind about what I can write. i would take out a notebook and write fragments until a form of a story looked as though it was forming. Right now, I'm still recovering from a severe case of writer's block and began writing posts for my website. Eventually, I want to get back to short story writing and writing for an online publication. Ironically, I can churn out academic papers that are 10+ pages that includes footnotes, end notes and citations in an instant.

When I get writer's block, I find that attempting to write something outside my comfort zone helps. I sometimes ask a friend to set me a challenge - they pick the genre and give me certain words or phrases that have to be incorporated into the text. It makes the writing a challenge. A sort of puzzle. I find that helps.
Thank you all for your advice, because I have indeed run into the problem again and this does help.
