I have a ton of these, but I thought it would be fun to talk about childhood misconceptions. I don't think I saw a thread like this:

When I was a kid, I thought grapefruits grew in halves (I had only seen cut grapefruit). Really.
What a wonderful idea, Miss T...

My childhood memories are somewhat faded, but I did believe my mother when she told me that she always knew if I was lying to her as she could see a black spot in my eyes. I spent hours looking in the mirror trying to find it!

That's a good one. One of mine concerns fruit as well.

Pears have a gritty texture, and when I was a kid, I couldn't eat them, because I thought they were full of bits of bones.

My parents did the same, only I never could find that black line on my forehead

I used to think when I was a kid that the world was fair. Sorry for the bummer, but to me, my first steps out of childhood was learning that not everyone was treated the same.
You can't get there from here, because when you get there you're still here and here is now there.
When I was a kid, and walked through the woods behind our farm, I'd wade through the miniature groves of May Apples covering the forest floor each spring. I believed there was a whole world that existed below the thick canopy, and I worried about stepping on tiny people I couldn't see, hiding below the dense leaves of the May Apples as they brushed past my pant-legs. Then in a few weeks, they'd all be gone, along with the tiny civilization they were concealing.

I used to think that if I jumped high enough, I could land on the moon. I still think that, so I guess I must be a kid at heart

This reminded me that when I was a kid, I thought that the reason people could not fly was because they did not practice hard enough and begin young enough. I was determined that I would start as soon as possible, and spent countless hours leaping off an ottoman, furiously flapping my arms. I actually thought I was beginning to make progress.
When I was a kid I thought you could fish for birds. My brother and I would attach string to a stick with bread tied on the end and sit like statues and try to catch one.
When I was a kid, the other boys used to say the girls were yuck. I didn't think so but shut up. If one just looks at the avatar pictures of the three women directly above me, LaJumelleMauvaise, TaliaRussell and Kiera, it is absolutely clear they were wrong!! Wow! You talk about Babes! Woohoo!

Funnily, I used to do something similar, only I'd jump off anything to try and make myself fly. I, too, really did start to think I was getting the hang of it. Maybe one day we shall manage.

When I was a kid I thought everything had feelings and I had to make sure there was never just one by itself.. my models, comic books, toys, stuffed animals.. always had to make sure they weren't by themselves.. I always thought they would feel lonely.. I know.. pathetic.. but kids get crazy notions..

I kind of felt that way, too.

When I was a kid, I thought that when I looked up in the sky and could see the clouds move, that I was seeing the earth turning.
As a kid I visited the fairytale themepark "Efteling" in Holland. This is the little candy and cookies cottage where the witch from Hansl and Gretl lives. You can see the poor kids. This place terrified me, because when you touched the handle of the gardengate....

.... the witch came to the door, opened the window and started to screech at you. I have long believed she was the real thing...

Hmmm...you mean you're not?
I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

When I was a kid I always wanted to watch Watership Down, I wanted to see it so badly and all the cute bunnies...Reality was when I finally got to watch it when it came on tv was WHAT THE HELL???? What kind of sick person thinks up a story like that?

I was utterly terrified and convinced the General was hiding under my bed because his body was never found, I don't think I slept for months...I will never let my kids watch it that's for sure.
When I was a kid I thought the year 2000 was a really long way away. Oh dear
When I was a kid, the year 2000 WAS a long way away. Comics said there would be a shuttle service to the moon!!

That is quite a nice thing to say Kiera. I love you too baby.
When I was a kid I thought 2001 was science fiction. As I grew older I sat in a drive-in movie theater trying to explain the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey to my parents. I was ten years old and had read the book, so I could explain the symbolism to them. They did not like that much, but it was still science-fiction. Now 2001 is taught in history class to my grand children. I never understood when science-fiction became the future. BTW the reason 2001 was the year for the book is because Jan 1st 2001 was the first day of the new millennium. (not 2000 like everyone celebrated) I know because that is what Clarke told me and several of my friends when we met him on a book signing tour in the mid 80's for The Songs of Distant Earth.

Thank you, newer than me person!

Hi Kiera!

When I was a kid, I thought coconut came in the shell shredded. The first time I went to visit my grandparents in Florida, right after they moved there, my grandfather opened a coconut in front of me. I kept asking him where the coconut was, and he kept pointing, but all I saw was the white inside of the shell. I thought you would open the shell and shredded coconut would fall out!

Me too, haha.

When I was a kid, I thought "we" would be friends forever. No boring details, but we'll say I learned how wrong I was far too early and crashed and burned in my junior high years because of it.

Oh my gosh. I thought that too! I learned that not everyone who says they're your friends will stay for very long. I learned to just go along with it until they left. Lesson learned! Haha
When I was a kid, I would ask "How did they put the holes in the Swiss cheese?" this was the subject of ridicule for years!!
