I've always liked limericks and I'm kind of surprised, they don't have their own thread on a site like this. Why not give it a try. I'll kick off with one, I originally wrote in the random poem thread.

To resist her gets harder and harder
when she stands there just wearing her garter
when she moves with her hips
and she moistens her lips
I forget I was hired to guard her

A bodyguard's nightmare... or dream?
If life seems jolly rotten
there's something you've forgotten
and that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing

Good one!

I love limericks, and have 2 published as short poems on this site.

A Philatelical Limerick

An Ode to Somniloquy

There is also The Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form, in case you had time hanging heavy on your hands.

And now, here is one to add to the thread:

There once was a lad from Chicoutimi,
Who said : I do not eat charcuterie,
If I were to do that,
I'd be sure to get fat,
For that's what charcuterie would do to me.

***

Chicoutimi : a city in Québec, Canada
Charcuterie : 1 : a store where pork products, as hams, sausages, and pâtés are sold.
2 : the items sold in such a store.

I've read all three of them and like them a lot. I apologize for scoring An Ode to Somniloquy with a 4, I wanted 5 but the mouse slipped.
I know a lot of limericks, most of them not suited for here, and all of them in dutch. So I'll stick to writing my own here. That's what this thread is for anyway. Thanks for your contribution.

Thank you for reading, commenting and voting on my limericks, Paul.

It's the nature of limericks to be naughty, often they're terribly ribald. I think it's part of the appeal.

Are they popular in Holland and does the Dutch language lend itself to constructing them?

They are pretty much unknown in French, which could just lead me to composing something limerickal.

I'd like to contribute, but I suck at limericks. Can't quite get them around my head, but they are fun to read.

Ah, Andrew, you'd be so good at them if you caught on!

They're so absurd, and the AABBA rhyme scheme is great for stretching the vocabulary and imagination. Give it a try, please? Pretty please?

Or not, I don't want to come across as bullying you, but encouraging instead.

I'll give it a bash. You know how much I love a challenge, especially with writing. Maybe this'll kickstart my brain again.

It was entirely my pleasure. I think, the Dutch language lends itself excellently for any kind of poetry. But I'm biased, I am Dutch after all. As for limericks, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of them in Dutch, most of them probably just as bad as the english ones.

What a great limerick,
It's so very slick,
But I wonder, Paulus,
Are you a walrus?
Here's an ice cream, take a lick!

You almost caught me this one time for real
Yet a walrus I'm not, that's the deal
but your icecream I ate
and it tasted real great
and to tell you the truth, I'm a seal

I just stopped here by to say,
I hope everyone had a great holiday,
That Santa brought you nice gifts,
Like maybe a couple of fifths,
And you didn't get run over by a sleigh.
I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

A guy from Glasgow, prefers limerick to haiku,
but what is he to do?
His haiku are often crap,
but his limericks are also pap.
Here's hoping people don't sue.

To this Glasgowish gent I'm not lying
cause his limericks don't send me flying
but there's nothing amiss
and I will grant him this
Though not perfect, at least he is trying

[If you've seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you'll know that all the language in this limerick has been used at least once on the show. Just trying to be in-keeping with Joss Whedon's style... Difficult because it really is inimitable.]

Probably The Worst Limerick Ever

There was a young man called Nick,
who had a really big brick,
he built a house,
just for a mouse,
who named himself Mick.

So, Mick was a mouse,
who lived in a house,
built by Nick
who had a brick,
but where was the grouse?

Well, the grouse
had his own house,
made from feathers
and leathers
of a certain wee mouse.

So, Nick
with his brick,
built a house for a mouse,
who was eaten by a grouse,
who. for the mouse was too quick.

Andrew, technically speaking you are right. Though adhering to the AABBA scheme, there is a metrum for limericks as well.
It should be something like
taDUMta taDUMta taDUMta for lines 1, 2 and 5 and
taDUMta taDUM for lines 3 and 4
or
tadaDUM tadaDUM tadaDUM for lines 1, 2 and 5 and
(ta)daDUM tadaDUM for 3 and 4

Your limericks still miss that, but they do bring a smile to my face, because they really are funny.

A lim'rick is easy to write
but make sure that the meter is right
when the rYthm is wrong
it won't fit to the song
so nobody will sing it tonight

there's something you've forgotten

It's pretty disgraceful for a bassist to not be able to even get such a simple rhythm down. Though, weirdly, I could do it on my bass. Hmm, maybe I should try writing limericks with bass tracks.

I think there is a significant difference between finding notes and finding words, but I bet that you are quite capable of doing both, if you give it a try.

There once was a beautiful Kitten,
Who was absolutely cute as a mitten.
She infiltrated my heart
I know we'll never part,
Because we are Kitty & Kitten.

It ain't perfect, the meter is slightly off and the last line doesn't rhyme with the first, but I might be improving.

I think it's pretty good. I don't see kitten and kitten not rhyming and the repetition doesn't disturb me at all. You can always play a little with the meter. It doesn't take much effort to get the rythm on this one right.

There once was a beautiful Kitten,

I'm not sure if you're kitty or kitten
I should know, cause I have seen it written
but one feeling shows
it practic'ly glows
and that is that you're really smitten

That one is better. I knocked mine up in a few minutes, not really thinking much of it, more just feeling my way, but had I thought more about it, I'd have come up with something better. Oh, and I'm Kitty, Aria is Kitten.

Aria is Kitten, I am Kitty
I'm sitting here writing this ditty,
though where it goes,
nobody knows
but I do know Kitten is pretty.

That makes me giggle It makes me giggle for two reasons: It's really funny. And there was this one guy who bullied me, and thought it funny to call me a scarecrow. I remember looking at him, with his straggly brown hair, his old, worn clothes and his freckled, blotchy face, thinking you poor thing, you look more like a scarecrow than me!

The words in my head keep on fighting
on the way to the surface they're biting
what ever about
they have to come out
and that's why I have to keep writing
If life seems jolly rotten
there's something you've forgotten

from Monty Python's "Life of Brian"
"I'm a poet" he would frequently shout
But he left no room for anyone to doubt
That he was in over his head

There's a lot of that sort of thing about!

Shows some class and some grace
Never tell lies
Don't overly sigh
And always remember to wash your face

Yes and no, AABBA is correct, the meter isn't spot on. If you go back a but in this thread, You'll find somethin I wrote about the rules for limericks.
But with a little effort, and forgive me for stealing your words:

When you finally do find your place
Show some real class and also some grace
Never tell any lies
And don't overly sigh
And remember to wash your sweet face
If life seems jolly rotten
there's something you've forgotten
and that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
