All About Toast and Toasters

Well, maybe not all about toast, since there is always more to say about it, what you spread on it, how you like it and so on, but it tells more about toasters than most people have even suspected existed.

Goodness knows I didn't think I would ever come across a Cyber Toaster Museum, but I did so today.

About 6,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians developed breads as we know them today. They discovered that if they let their bread dough sit out in Egypt's nice, warm climate, it would puff up, and if they baked this dough in an enclosed oven it would retain its fluffiness. This seemingly magical process was not fully understood until the 17th Century when the microscope revealed the yeast cells that cause leavening.

The process of scorching bread to preserve it spread through many cultures. The word toast comes from the Latin Torrere, Tostum - to scorch or burn. The Romans, in their conquests, took their love of toasted bread with them and spread the custom farther, even up into Britain. Later, English colonists brought the tradition to the Americas.

Toasting bread does more than just preserve it, of course, it changes its nature; bread becomes sweeter, crunchier and the perfect surface on which to spread all sorts of things.


I haven't yet taken a full visit of the Cyber Toaster Museum but this has to be one of the more interesting toaster ever made.

The fabulous Toast-O-Lator

Manufactured from 1936 through 1952(?), this wonderful toaster brings the assembly line to the breakfast table. When you turn on the Toast-O-Lator a row of teeth begin rotating in a circular fashion. Bread is placed in the appropriate end and is walked through the unit while being toasted. You can watch the bread toasting through the circular viewing window in the side.

So, let's talk TOAST!

How do you like yours? What kind of bread? Butter? Jam? Marmalade? Peanut butter? Honey? Dunk your toast in your tea or coffee?

And what is the best use of that age old classic, burnt toast?
Mmm, toast. I must get my finger clicking on that link to the Cyber Toaster Museum, later, when I'm back on the mainframe.

I like my toast pretty darned brown, almost black, that is when there's brown bread around... with lashings of butter. When there's white bread, I like it slightly less brown, but still with lashings of butter. Sometimes with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, as well. Oh and let's not forget the customary serving with hot, strong tea. Or hot chocolate, if I'm feeling rebellious. Sometimes soup, too. Dunking toast in soup is freakin' awesome! Well, maybe not awesome, but pretty darnged good smile

I'm not sure what it's called in other countries but I like raisin toast with butter, or when it comes to savoury I enjoy toasted cheese sandwiches and like to dunk them in tomato soup. Vegemite toast is good, too!
That all sounds good to me! Well, almost all, sorry Lisa, I'm not a fan of vegemite or marmite.

One of my favourites is toast spread with butter so the butter melts into the bread, then some honey, which heats and melts in with the butter and then some chopped walnuts on top. That is sooo amazing and a bit of cinammon is good on it as well.

Orange marmalade or apricot jam are great on toast, as a change from the honey.

I love toasted cheese sandwiches, I could have them for lunch almost every day of the week I think.

Yeah...my mother used to do the butter and cinnamon thing when I was a kid...haven't had it in years though, but I'll go with that...seems to be a popular choice around here I see...

our toaster is red - it matches our kitchen, yellow with accents of red. toast is almost always whole wheat with a thin layer of magarine spread and then sprinkled with parmasian cheese shavings and it's usually accompanied by green tea. sometimes, if i have a sweet tooth, i'll put either orange marmalade or raspberry jam on it instead.
I love sourdough bread. I usually don't like my bread toasted heavily, and indeed, I don't even own a toaster. I either use a panini press on bread, or just let it toast lightly on a pan. I usually just have it with butter, or, with sourdough, sometimes I'll eat it with Frantoia olive oil.
My toaster is black, and silver. It looks nice, and matches the rest of my other stuff.

I like my toast well cooked, with a great crunch. Some days its with a bit of butter, and some cinnamon. Other days its nice with apple butter! Yum on both accounts. :3
My toaster in the flat can toast 4 pieces at once ^^

I like mine either with butter and jam, or nutella.
she has HER side of the toaster and I have MINE...she has HER bread...and...and...etc.!
Though not a toaster, this would go well with any toaster. I remember my gran had one. It was in her bedroom - a place that was strictly off limits, but I did sneak a wee peek at some point. I thought it was really cool. If I remember correctly, from what my mum told me, you could set it like an alarm, so your tea would be made just in time for you waking up. The model shown here, is very similar, and may actually be the same type that my gran owned.

We seriously need more threads like this! I might make a tea thread, actually, but give me a couple of days to get all the resources together. Let's bring back some light-heartedness to the forums!

That is a very intruiging machine, quite elegant looking, in fact. I hope you do start a tea thread, it would be appropriate here.

I now have to have Gluten free bread, and it really is quite grim... I so miss lovely fresh bread. Toasting the gluten free bread does, at least make it more palatable, and gave me an excuse to buy a swish new toaster as I can't risk cross contamination from using the same toaster as the rest of my family.

Thank you for that, Andrew. Much appreciated and I will certainly try it. Quite excited actually, as a friend just brought me some flour and xanthum gum from England. Most recipes call for ingredients that I can not get here.

Well, since ya asked, here's 21 ideas for energy boosting breakfast toast I'll be honest, I can't really eat anything massively flavourful for breakfast, but some of those ideas might be worth a try. The banana, almond butter and chia seeds one, I'd try for lunch and would actually pop the toast under the grill once I've arranged the topping.

Interesting ideas, but most of them are far more demanding flavour wise than I can take in the morning either.

Toast, butter, jam, sometimes a mild cheese with the jam, that does it for me.

Fresh fruit in season, which means NOT RIGHT NOW! LOL!
