Well, I wrote the followin’ song for my cousin as a Christmas gift. She got kinda mad at me when I told her instead a payin’ the cemetery folk to put blankets on her mom and daddy’s grave to make ‘em easier to find in the snow, we could just drive big sticks into the ground. She’s gonna be buried with them, and she worried ‘bout how I might tend her grave if she went first. So I wrote this little song ta comfort her while watchin’ the hockey game. I can’t sing it to ya, but if ya read the counts aloud that I included you’ll kinda get the idea.
Two Blankets and a Stick
(Dedicated to my cousin Edith.)
Two blankets and a stick (five….six….seven….eight)
and a flaming candle wick (five….six….seven….eight)
when the snow is on the ground
and the grave cannot be found
look for blankets and a stick (five….six….seven….eight)
Two blankets and a stick (five….six….seven….eight)
finding graves you need a trick (five….six….seven….eight)
use a blanket that is bright
or a stick of the right height
use blankets and a stick. (five….six….seven….eight)
When I was just a lad (five….six….seven….eight)
talkin’ with my old grand dad (five….six….seven….eight)
when you come for me to bury
he said just make sure you carry
a blanket and a stick (five….six….seven….eight)
When I’m lyin’ with the worms (five….six….seven….eight)
‘neath the grass and snow and berms (five….six….seven….eight)
I’ll be visible and warm
even in a bad snow storm
with a blanket and a stick. (five….six….seven….eight) Don’t worry, Edie…..I got your back!
