Walking through this square mile

Through the taxi ranks and lamps

Among the city slickers

Behind the lady and the tramp

I see all their progress

All the concrete greyish brown

Nothing really changes

Down here in Temperance Town

Waifs and strays are begging

Call girls hide away

A homeless guy behind me

Begs the price of another day

A young girl cries 'please help me!

My love lies lost unfound'

Another lamplight blinking

Down here in Temperance Town

I head on to the station

I hear a choir in my head

Could be Mahalia Jackson

Still the air is hung with lead

Two lovers part in darkness

The coach gears change on down

We’re all looking for something

Down here in Temperance Town

I hate empty glasses

And the bars here shut at two

I’m watching people go now

Just like me and you

We’re all looking for something

And will I hear that sound?

When my love says to me

'Meet me in Temperance Town'
