Wisteria petals lately drifting down,
The past renews, the city draws me back
To haunts, remembrance, loving aches resolved,
And yet she still invades my fretful thoughts,
A laugh that echoes off the stuccoed walls
To fall among the steps we left behind.
Tripping cobbled streets on skipping feet,
That shared a space, embracing, dancing softly
As a treat, a joyous, sweet delight.
Forgotten meals were shared and lives compared
Between we two, sustaining, learning, dreaming
What might come.
And yet the fragrance lingers now in pendulous
Drops of doubt, dripping down
In no expectation for the resurrection of those days.
Emptiness, so empty in and out.
Without a presence to reach out and touch,
With no one left to guide me on my way,
Just drifting petals from Wisteria blown and whisked about
To cover, soften, hide the emptiness
Along the paths, we lately passed.
