It was a day just like today, I remember,
The beginning of spring, a day of fresh beauty.
Vanished were the harsh and bitter winds of winter.
The landscape dull and heavy under a sullen sky,
And the very earth hard like iron, cold and dead.
But that was all forgotten now, just like a dream
From which we had awakened into a new world,
Redolent with hope and promise, lifting our hearts,
And filling us with untold joy and happiness.
Such sweet memories of youth, so long ago now,
And yet I can recall it now, as bright and clear
As if it were yesterday, oh love of my heart,
For it was on that day when first we pledged our troth,
And promised to be true henceforth 'til our life's end.
It was a day just like today, I remember,
The beginning of spring, a day of fresh beauty.
The returning sun warming the slumbering earth.
And waking the unseen seeds, which had been waiting
After their long hibernation, for its gentle touch
To stir them into life, sending shoots of bright green
To clothe the meadows with a carpet of colour.
The sky was new washed, a paler blue than summer's
Hotter and more vibrant tones, shimmering with heat.
All around the air was filled with the cheerful hum
Of bees gathering pollen, and the joyful song
Of birds, busy collecting twigs and moss to build
Their nests in preparation to receive the eggs
From which a new generation would soon spring forth.
It was a day just like today, I remember,
The beginning of spring, a day of fresh beauty.
We were little more than children, and like children
We wandered hand in hand beside a tinkling stream,
Your bare feet tracing bright paths of silver in grass,
Still wet with dew, the golden bells of daffodils
Kissing your legs as you skipped merrily along,
Your cheerful treble trilling in innocent mirth,
Full of happiness, untouched by more adult cares.
A stray shaft of sunlight caught your unbound tresses
Transforming them into a coronet of fire
I loved you then, and I love you still, even though
The gold has turned to silver, and your face is worn,
And lined with the tender marks of life's passing.
It was a day just like today, I remember,
The beginning of spring, a day of fresh beauty.
And yet I can recall it now, as bright and clear
As if it were yesterday, oh love of my heart,
For it was on that day when first we pledged our troth,
And promised to be true henceforth 'til our life's end.
We have been married now for more than fifty years,
Raised children of our own, and seen them fly the nest,
To love and marry and have children of their own,
And yet in my mind's eye I still see that young girl,
Walking among the daffodils beside a stream,
Who stole my heart, and who by some strange miracle
Of fate, returned my love a hundredfold and more,
And bound her life to mine until our lives shall end.
