I sat there looking in his eyes.

They focused then looked away,

What is happening...why can't you stay?

It's not fair and I don't care.

I'll be selfish, I want you here.

My eyes blink and fill with tears.

I hear these idiots in the background.

I refuse to turn around.

He keeps my gaze and I return it.

These last minutes with him I won't forfeit.

Find your savior, get your peace...I hear.

I say to him...Don't worry, you have nothing to fear.

These hypocrites are clearing their souls,

You've been a good man and everyone knows.

I hear a prayer, not in Irish and not of the old ways.

Instead I think of the surf, our talks and songs of those days.

I chuckle to him and say, Can this be?

That you are going on before me?

I remember what my new love said to me, his wife,

"This all to happen, it's part of life".

I'm trying as hard as I can...

I keep steadfast as I hold his hand.

He struggles to talk and his smile begins to fade,

It's okay Da, I'm not afraid.

I lean closer as my tears fall fast and unstoppable.

He will take care of me, he'll be responsible.

Knowing his little girl would be cared for and protected,

His new fate he completely accepted.

His one last squeeze and a twinkle in his eye..

I knew that was his last goodbye.

Why do people leave me when I want and need them the most...I don't want to admit,

Life is cruel, happy and possible....Death is the same, we just don't know it.
