As I stand in the unlit darkness
Observing the clouds cover the sky which hides the stars and the moon furtively
I argue in my mind
Is it black or a much more subtle deep velvety purple that appears black?
The smoke from my cigarette unfurls into its depths
I marvel at its unadorned beauty
In the distance I hear the waves crashing against the beach at Selsey
They call to me and I long to move towards them
I’d sell my soul to become the wind
To fly unfettered while skimming the earth
Watching up from above as I move on,
Touching the waves and making them churn
Being something wildly elemental
I’d fly for so long that the the sun would start to rise
And languages and land shapes would change
Singing in the voice of the gale
Filling sails with air and helping them on their way
Moving kites and drying washing
As I flit and lift bird’s wings to help them soar
I enjoy the fantasy of that imagery
I turn around and look inside to the warmth of the house
Listening to the noise of your family
Highlighted in the window like real TV
I walk inside to be enfolded into their midst
