I saw a single swan today
Swimming alone upon a pond
I always thought they traveled in pairs
That's how I've always seen them before.

She seemed so regal
Even on her own
Her neck curled, beak forward
But I sensed a sadness of her swim without her mate.

Searching the pond for another stray
Wondering if she was in flight
Upon a nest
Surely such beautiful lovers cannot suffer tiffs.

My heart aches at such a thought
Even in a world where often little is right
Somethings just are
Meant to be, have to be.

So I sat along the water's edge
Watching the calmness as she cut
Thought the water
No sign of effort or underlying propulsion.

Could it be will alone that moved her
Could that explain her composure
A sign of her strength
Or the certitude her solitude was temporary?

I put my mind to work
Surely I could mimic
Surely I could learn
Closing my eyes I focused within.

I let my heart go free
My mind finally at peace
Opening my eyes
When I felt you take my hand.

Across the water
Directly in our vision
A silent ripple marks the empty surface
Two birds having taken wing.
