then the lights begin to dim,
and in the spotlight’s capture,
they can see – it’s really him!

A true iconic rocker –
one that everybody knows,
with a fanbase he’s collected
from a thousand prior shows.

The instruments are waking up,
as the players take the stage
and try to sound the same
as when they’re played by Jimmy Page.

He saunters to the microphone
amidst the cheering fans,
and makes an introduction
for the members of the band.

They follow his expressions
and are captured by his song,
with lyrics so embedded,
they can’t help but sing along.

Hordes of loyal listeners
who’ve admired him through the years,
still relish the connection
every time that he appears.

And as he pans the faces
of the fans that crowd the floor,
his mind can’t help but wander back
to the way it was before.

When thousands packed the stadiums
to observe the glitz and glamour,
and amps would pound iconic sounds,
like a huge melodic hammer.

When pretty girls would flash the stage
from atop their boyfriends’ shoulders,
and thousands choked on clouds of smoke,
as passing doobies smoldered.

The shows today aren’t quite the same –
intense, but not as loud,
from prior scenes of screaming teens
to a much more stable crowd.

He glances at the drummer
and the man on bass guitar,
and thinks about his prior mates
and how he got this far.

His life’s been quite a journey
that so few will ever know,
breaking music records
on the stage and radio.

Topping charts and stealing hearts,
with every new endeavor,
pushing every boundary –
changing rock and roll forever.

He started on this mission
back in nineteen sixty-seven,
and to this day, it’s paved the way
to a man’s Stairway to Heaven.
