No One Dies Of A Broken Heart

It was a heart attack the doctors said,
Brought on by overwork and too much stress;
He was never going to die in bed,
It is true, but I would hazard a guess
That this was only part of the real truth,
And there was much more to it than they thought.
Of course, he wasn't in the flush of youth,
And at times seemed a little overwrought,
Always burning the candle at both ends.
He had been so happy these last few years,
But just last week when I saw him with friends,
I thought he might be on the verge of tears.
But it really can't be true what some say,
No one dies of a broken heart, do they?

He was happily married, we all thought,
At least that is how it appeared to me,
And his wife didn't seem to be the sort
To have an affair; I'm sure that you’ll agree.
But there had been rumours; I'm sad to say,
That she had been seen a few weeks ago,
Dressed to kill in the middle of the day,
Hanging on the arm of some fancy joe.
We knew that there must have been some mistake,
When it was said they had taken a suite;
She just isn't like that for goodness sake,
She cannot be guilty of such deceit.
But it really can't be true what some say,
No one dies of a broken heart, do they?

Slanderous words may never be reclaimed,
And for the harm, they do to the blameless,
Those who spread lies should be publicly shamed,
Though there may be no way to make redress
For the sad consequences of their spite.
My friend heard the whispers about his wife,
Foul baseless rumours, that night after night
Twisted and turned in his guts like a knife,
Depriving him of health, until at last
He broke under the strain of suspicion,
Though his wife was guilty of no trespass,
Merely a victim of miscognition.
But it really can’t be true what some say,
No one dies of a broken heart, do they?
