A nation was braced for the end of the race
and the close of a turbulent year –
The votes had been cast, all the data amassed
and the victor was soon to appear.
They’d both tried to tap a mysterious gap,
as a way to unbalance the scale –
was anyone’s guess, but the folks in the press
were convinced that the Donald would fail.
None were prepared for the stats that were aired
when the millions of votes had been summed –
was a total delight for the folks on the right,
but the rest were left totally bummed.
Results were denied, and celebrities cried,
many actors who’d threatened to leave
would have to accept that their promise if kept,
wouldn’t cause many people to grieve.
The winner declared, many students were scared
that their loans wouldn’t likely be waived,
as Clinton’s decree that their school should be free
was a perk that millennials craved.
Their girl had been beat, so they took to the street
in an act of defiance and rage,
with some wielding signs of malicious designs
and no interest or plans to engage.
Some there were sent to attend the events,
just to make it look good on the news –
to kick in some doors, break the windows in stores
and perhaps snag some high-dollar shoes.
Some felt abused by the words that he used,
often pointing to scripture and verse –
they’d jump on their stools and then break their own rules,
throwing insults that sounded much worse.
Pundits conspire like a fraudulent choir,
as confirmed when their servers were hacked –
while dealing their lines to the gullible minds
who accept their assertions as fact.
The ads that they waged and the pols that they staged
told a story they longed to believe –
but only the booth could uncover the truth,
leaving everyone feeling deceived.
No one’s been spared since the race was declared
and emotions have peaked to the max –
the nation’s left torn, a bit weathered and worn
from the months of ferocious attacks.
But even back then, there was no way to win,
the division was far too extreme –
not one would appeal to conflicting ideals
and consensus was only a dream.
