We built a life upon this earth
Filled with love and ceaseless mirth
Each day brought never-ending laughter
Sweet thoughts of happily ever after.
We worked so hard and made our plan
To travel far across this land
But as the time did gather near
Those dreams began to disappear
Oh, so subtle at the start
Were little things that hurt my heart
My words unheard, perhaps ignored
No matter how much I implored.
We had forever, or so it seemed
But this is not the life I dreamed
Dementia is the word they used
The darkness of a mind confused
There were some moments you’d return
Reminded how our love did burn
But then you’d slip away again
Leaving agony and pain
These sparks of who you used to be
Brought only futile hope to me
And every time I’d see you smile
Left me further in denial
Befuddled eyes stare at me now
As I’m reminded of my vow
And, though my heart is surely broken,
I’ll honor all those words once spoken
A cruel thief steals you away
More and more each passing day
I search your face for recognition
But see none in this grave condition
Your voice, once music to my ears
Brings only bitter-sweetened tears
I ache for us and our despair
Behind the veil, are you still there?
