THE BEGINNING: Anticipating Everything and Nothing
A warm, expansive feeling fills my chest
And screams out inside of me --“I love you.”
But I don’t say it out loud
Because I know you don’t trust the meaning of the words when spoken too soon
And neither should I.
Romance lifts the soul and catches us on its wing,
Creates new dreams, new wonders, new excitements.
Love is that precious place inside of us
That lets us soar towards the sky,
But gently grounds us in the knowledge and acceptance of reality’s limitations.
Expectations can burn the soul.
Trusting the process can surprise the soul
Although the outcome may be the same
Do I know what love is? Do I know what I truly love?
What words I might say are not to be thrown back at me.
They are to be accepted with gratitude, with silence.
Accept them with belief, if you can
I know I give my heart away too soon
And perhaps you do too
Together we feel, in silence
And wonder if it’s too soon.

THE END: What Never Was
I loved you
I wanted you
I needed you
I clung to you as though you were the only thing left in the world
I gave myself up in your arms, gasping for air,
As though you were my last breath
And now I weep.
I weep for what can not be
And for what never really was.
