Competition Entry: Solstice
I stand alone in the quiet early morning night
The cold December moon, while low, is still bright

Her comforting light reveals your face to me
I always find you when I look upon her, you see

As this last autumn breeze kisses my face
I feel your gentle hand upon my heart in this place

The shadows of the morning quiet surround
As if the peace the world sought has finally been found

I turn and face the points of the compass rose
And ponder those things I can only suppose

Christmas peace and joy but three days near
In our hearts we should feel that way the entire year

The New Year arrives one week further still
Hopeful promises front of mind, resolutions unfulfilled

As I stand at this moment in time, fifteen minutes to five
There are but three minutes left before this Solstice arrives

I return my gaze toward the waning moon above
And to the face I see in her, the face of the woman I love

On this December morning in my heart, you’re with me here
This first cold day of winter, we’ll soon say goodbye to the year

In just moments from now the twilight will kiss the day
We say welcome to winter, autumn has slipped away
