The water splashed over his head as he pushed himself desperately forwards, trying to stay afloat, keep his head up and not swallow too much.
“Got to make it...” he thought, trying to see through reddened eyes, “Got to... to keep... going.”
He pushed with as much effort as his tired legs could manage, “Mustn't... give... up...”
He was tiring now, struggling, praying to find something, even just to hold on to...
