Vows
You said you’d always be there
with support through thick or thin,
but when I needed shelter,
you refused to let me in.
I knocked and begged for mercy,
so my needs were very clear –
I pounded and I pounded,
but you still refused to hear.
You watched me from your window,
like you wanted me to know
that you’d never keep your promise –
you just wanted me to go.
Your vision of our future
didn’t turn out like you planned,
it’s clear you hold no image
of us walking hand in hand.
The plans we made together,
have been altered by surprise –
what ought to be exciting
sparked rejection in your eyes.
You said the best solution
was a visit to the clinic,
for a medical procedure
that would fix things in a minute.
I see our year together now
was nothing but a joke,
all that time invested - gone
in a pungent cloud of smoke.
I feel like such a loser,
all the clues I failed to see –
that your final destination
was companionship for free.
You failed to show commitment
to a life of give and take,
and when your best was put to test,
you showed - you’re just a fake.
I’ll never understand it,
how a bond that ran so deep
could end in such an instant –
thanks to vows you failed to keep.
