Author's Notes

"I have advanced MS. I used to walk with my dog every day with a wheelchair scooter. At first I would tie her leash onto the steering post, but when she pulled the whole scooter over when a cat crossed my path, I started to tie the leash to the seat post instead. I lived in Riverdale and passed this landmark tree every day. Some foreboding looking birds used to perch on the branches. I thought of those birds as mini vultures. Maybe they were hawks, but I don’t know. Maybe someone who lived in Riverdale before the brickyard was developed could let me know what the birds were. This tree was in between the river and Riverdale hall."

Do you remember
A special place
Where the artistically woven branches
Of a long-dead tree
Told unknown stories from years past?

It is paved with asphalt now,
Supporting the feet and wheels of commuters and visitors
Enjoying the riverside view.
The physical presence of that thoughtful landmark is now gone
But if you are quiet and very still, you might still feel it’s presence there.
