My recovery from the heart attack is progressing as well as can be expected. I wanted to pop in and tell you all that although I'm still a bit sheepish on rating your works, I have enjoyed many pieces that I have read very much.

What a variety of subject matter and writing styles, thank-you.

Just catching up here...

Yikes, how scary! I'm glad to hear you're recuperating.

About the variety of writing on the site, it's one of the things I appreciate about Stories Space. The site is different things to different people, and most are accommodated here. The members are, by and large, quite supportive of each other, so it's a place where I feel safe trying an experimental style or just something different for me.

So rest, recover, and when you're ready, let us see what you're going to bring to the table. It's nice to have you here.

Quote by Harriet Alexander (in The Telegraph)
One of Honduras's most celebrated human rights activists has been murdered by gunmen who stormed her home and shot her dead.

Berta Caceres, a mother of four, was recognised internationally for her campaigns – in particular for her work on indigenous rights and environmental causes. She was killed on Thursday morning in La Esperanza, a town in the Intibucá district, 150 miles from the capital Tegucigalpa. The next day she would have turned 44.

To pretentious snobs and annoying drips
Imagining yourselves superior
Instead, I'd say, the scale tips
Toward mere pain in the posterior

What makes you think you're better than us?
To what do you owe your ascension?
Frankly, your smugness leads us to thus:
You need an ego intervention

If, by chance, you find you're put off,
Miffed by such an impudent view
Though you may bluster, though you may scoff
This poem just might be about you
Congratulations to those selected for the top three places, and to the others named as honorable mentions.
For future reference, a one-entry limit means ONE TOTAL, not one at a time. Apparently we'll have to spell that out more clearly next time.

When will contest entries be opened up for guest voting?

I didn't realize that voting was closed to guests on the competition. It doesn't really matter for me. I only allow members to vote on my stories. Good luck all. It will be over soon.

Yes, it had to be done because people were cheating (voting multiple times, etc.). At some point, guest voting is allowed on the stories, but I can't remember whether it's when the competition closes or when the winners are announced.

I'm fairly sure guest voting makes up the bulk of the scores on my work. I promote my writing on other sites, as well as letting family and friends know when I've posted something.

Please note that this will be the first Stories Space story competition where mods are allowed to enter along with everyone else. To ensure fairness, mods entering the competition have not been allowed access to the story judging forum, nor will they be on the judging panel.

Best of luck to everyone entering the competition.

Does that mean you're entering to competition?

Yas isn't entering, but I am.

I am not verifying any contest submissions, nor even reading them until after the closing date. Best of luck to all my fellow entrants.

Oh no! Gonna make my story run for its money!

The more the merrier! We'll be running together.

Did you ever hide or play under the bed when you were a child?

Funny you should ask. I had a very high bed as a child. It was totally unsafe and would never be allowed under today's standards. There was oodles of room underneath it — and every square inch was utilized for "storage," a habit I carried into adulthood. It's only been within the last two or three years that I cleaned everything out from under the bed, and now I'm a little too big to play there.

How far do you walk on an average day?
My word of the day is passive-aggressive, because I've had to deal with someone who was behaving that way.

eleemosynary

All right, Mr. deWriter, you sent me to the dictionary to learn that eleemosynary means "of, relating to, or supported by charity." Nice choice!
I'm going to guess that being malkied means you were given bad directions.

Mal —> bad
Kie —> street (slang)

How far off is my answer?

Are you lazy when it comes to cleaning/tidying?

Well, yes, I suppose I am.

Is your housekeeping style more in line with that of Felix Unger (fastidious) or Oscar Madison (slovenly), the roommates in the Odd Couple?
A kid on a skateboard flew out of nowhere right in front of me while I was driving yesterday. I'm sure he never realized how close he came to being hit, but the near miss certainly got my adrenalin pumping. I keep thinking about the what ifs: if he had started a second later, or if I had been going maybe one or two miles an hour faster, the result would have been tragic.

How do you calm yourself after such an experience?
There was a row of trees at the edge of the schoolyard that only kids who walked home were allowed to go past. It was drilled into us NOT TO CROSS THAT LINE. Every day, I walked with a friend to that point, then we said our goodbyes and she kept walking home while I ran over to line up for the bus.

One day, deeply engrossed in conversation, I ended up about 20 yards on the wrong side of the trees — which the mean girls noted with delight. I was sick with worry and tearfully confessed to my mother, who took me to see the teacher. She listened to my story, told me to be more careful in the future, and assured me that I didn't need to worry about the tattletales.

So my transgression did land me in a tiny bit of trouble, but nearly as much as I had envisioned.

Should I have been punished?

Have you ever had a writing piece that you wanted approved but were very nervous about it?

(Excited and nervous together)

Oh, yes! I was very nervous when I submitted the original version of "The Secret Life of Bellingham Sam" on, ahem, another site. It was the first piece I submitted, and I wasn't sure people would get that it was meant to be a humor story (because the humor category didn't exist back then).

Which is more difficult for you to write: the beginning or end of a story?
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
The Magnificent Seven
Vertigo
Being There
Brighton Beach Memoirs
Mary Poppins
The Sound of Music
Beauty and the Beast
The Little Mermaid
Little Miss Sunshine
The Pink Panther

...and a few others already mentioned (Rear Window is my favorite Hitchcock movie)
