Fortunately, I am a garlic farmer and know that garlic is a sure-fire cure for indigestion brought on by eating chocolate-covered Brussels sprouts.

A third tab has now been added.

That's great! Thanks for the quick change.

However — and I apologize for being nitpicky about it — the All tab really ought to be the default. Otherwise, as Paul has pointed out,
poems won't appear on the landing page that everyone sees, including guests who aren't necessarily aware that the different tabs exist.

And for those who want to toggle, leave those new buttons where they are as an addition to all the buttons on the left.

That's exactly what we're talking about doing, Paul. I'm certain that the View All tab will be the default home page.

The tabs were added to provide more viewing options, not to exclude any category. In fact, it could be argued that providing poetry a separate page actually increases its exposure among readers who are looking for poems.

Please be patient as we work to implement the View All option. These things take time, especially when the staff is made up entirely of volunteers.

No more back-and-forth on this topic is necessary. The members spoke, and your concerns are being addressed.

We are looking at getting a third button that will allow the member to click that to have both stories and poems visible like it used to be. That way, everyone wins. Please be patient in regards to this and we will see when it can get done.

Thank you.

I still fail to see, why poetry should not be there on the homepage. The buttons on the left offer every visitor the opportunity to view the genre he likes without banning one specific genre from the frontpage. In my humble opinion toggling between prose and verse isn't bad, but first of all, let that be an option and don't give preference on the homepage to either one, and second, do it consistently. Songs are poetry too, yet that remained on the homepage.

The homepage has always been the place, where every author in every genre got equal exposure for new work. The current change tells a specific group of writers, the poets among us, that their genre is less important than the rest. Even if you choose to ignore the impact of that on current members, it certainly makes SS less attractive for poets.

Paul, poetry is not and never has been banished from the home page. Under the two-button system, it was given its own home page, right next to the stories home page. The addition of a View All button will return to the days of yore when everything was intermingled on one start page.

Those who want to see all works, whether stories or poems, will be able to. Those who prefer stories can choose that option, and poetry lovers can opt to see only poems. It's a good thing. :-)

Thanks, Blue. That is the best solution.

They are all stories, according to the dictionary:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/story

I'll draw your attention to this part:

a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader; tale.

That's right. I worked in journalism for many years. Guess what we called our reports, even the driest accounts of municipal goings-on? Stories. We called them stories.
But when it's noted that not all of "your submissions" have been submitted (because drafts can be stored), what will be the next pedantic complaint?

I think what Andy had in mind was a members' choice selection open to voting by all members, not a small panel of selected judges. Do I have that right, Andy?

What the heck is a member's choice if not the ones that the system has selected or recognised based on whatever criteria said system has in place to analyse the choices of the members? And more or less anonymously, at that, which means it side steps the risk of the popularity contest.

The system counts and displays guest votes, not just member votes. What I have percolating in my mind is a members-only recognition, and safeguards would be put in place to make sure it isn't simply a popularity contest.

I believe that's how I read it too.. but that's already what happens.. members are voting and it always comes down to who has the most friends willing to vote as opposed to the level of quality of the piece.. I'm not saying they aren't one in the same, but it is analogous to North Dakota trying to keep up with California in number of votes..

Agreed, but this conversation has me thinking about ways to implement a members' choice award without it being strictly a popularity contest.

It just might be possible...

If you preview your story and then go back into edit mode to make a few changes, the rating will oftentimes get unchecked and so you'll get an error message when you try to submit. It's happened to me more times than I should admit, and I always have a moment of panic before remembering about the rating glitch.
The mods are stretched thin as it is.

Not only are we volunteers, but we all have other full-time responsibilities requiring our attention. Owing to this fact, it's rare for more than three moderators to be active on any given day, and often only one or two are available.

Even so, we're handling well over 50 submissions a week. Most days it's a struggle to keep the number of pieces awaiting verification in the single digits.

Speaking for myself, I can't support adding another task to our already very full duty roster.

I was also wondering who it is that verifies the stories is it the site moderators or one of the story moderators

Either a site moderator or story moderator may verify stories, and how quickly submissions are processed depends on a number of factors.

However, there appears to be a problem with your latest submission, Nekala. It isn't in our queue of stories awaiting verification, nor is it on your list of submitted stories (Stories List at the top of your profile page). If you're having difficulties with a submission, please use the Contact Us form (under the question mark in the blue bar at top).

Thank you.
