Slug

There by a bush on the dimly lit pavement, a dark brown shape. Slender and smooth, it glistens.

As I creep closer the size becomes clear; as long as my foot and fat like a sausage.

The most enormous slug in the world! Then revealed as an elderly, squishy banana.
50 word stories are one type of micro-fiction. Other forms include twitter message lengths (140 character). I think micro-fiction usually includes anything up to and including 150 words.

I like 50 word stories because they were my first introduction to micro-fiction through http://fiftywordstories.com/

Unlike poetry, micro fiction is a small dose of prose. The aim is to tell a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end in the exact number of words. Not "less than" 50 words, but exactly 50 words. It forces you to consider every word and look for ways to say the most in the least number of words.

Why not have a go at posting your own 50 word story here?
One last bump.

The deadline for the contest is Monday 6th Feb so you've still got this weekend to work on it.
Hi Janina,

As far as I'm aware there's no way to add pictures to stories on this site. I've sometimes created banners for my stories and used them as my forum signature or posted them on my profile, but if you're looking to use pictures to illustrate your story then you're out of luck I'm afraid.

You could always post your stories on your blog with pictures. A lot of people here are bloggers too.

Good luck with your articles.

I'm trying to focus on the 1st draft of a new novel. It's a tie in with a film and upcoming web series from the website I help run - The Great Escape. We're trying for this whole "Transmedia storytelling" thing so eventually there may also be related radio plays, comics and stuff. It's an exciting project.
Would have to be Vampire Diaries on account of the fact I haven't seen Grimm.

Dawn of the Dead or Shaun of the Dead?
I cheated big time, but this thread has been dormant for months.
I think, THINK, this is a Pulp Fiction reference, and the song is Flowers on the Wall.

Do correct me if I'm wrong. In the mean time, a really easy one to get this thread moving again:

"Get away from her, you bitch!"
I have favourite authors who I religiously buy and read anything by, but I also like to read books I've had recommended to me or heard people talking about. Cover and title are a big influence when I'm browsing; I like to go to second hand and discount book stores and pick up things that look interesting, generally in the sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal genres.

What to read next tends to be more a matter of looking through the vast pile of unread books on my bookshelves.
I am beta reading a friends novel manuscript although chances are it will be published before I finish it since I got started late.

Keep an eye out for Crimes Against Magic by Steve J McHugh smile
Well, I'm probably nit picking, but "Ask the reader" still seems to me to be about asking for suggestions rather than sharing.

I scanned down the list of forum topics looking for where to post about books I had read, saw "ask the reader" and "ask for readers' opinions on story ideas" and thought, well I don't have a question for readers, that doesn't seem suitable. Hence the recommendation here.

I wondered if maybe it might not be working to attract readers to the forum, that's all.
I'd like to see an area in the forum dedicated to readers rather than writers. Somewhere to share book recommendations, tell people what you're reading or have read and what you think of it.

There is a lot of space dedicated to writers on the forum and I wonder if we might attract more community members interested in reading if we expanded the topics in this way.
Neither, it has to be custard ;)
But I suppose I'll take ice cream if it's what you've got.

(being a UK gal I had to look up what a la mode meant in this context)

Sushi or tapas?
*Bump*
A little under three weeks left to enter. We're quite short on entries, so take a chance, you could have a reasonable shot at winning!
Not sure if this is an upgrade issue or simply a site issue, but the page title (i.e what it shows in the browser tab or at the top of the browser) for the "Audio Stories" category says "Free audio erotic stories". Something that didn't get caught in adapting the site maybe?
My plan for the first half of the year or so is to finish off a lot of the half finished first drafts I have kicking around, so I can focus on less things at once. Then I want to switch into studying and editing mode to try and tighten up my novel.

Not to say I won't start something new if I'm inspired though silly I definitely want to do something for the new beginnings contest since it's such an inspiring theme.

@Mandsi - what sort of writing course are you applying for? I'm thinking of doing a short course next autumn, partially just for the fun of meeting other writers in the area.
We've not specified a limit. We had a few entries for the Christmas contest but not that many. If you would like to submit more than one then I don't see a problem with that, but if we don't get many entries we may choose which we think is the best of the two to compare to the other entries.
