About 3 weeks ago my son warned me against watching a film which had a title too long for him to recall. He told me it was such twaddle that he almost switched it off. Last Sunday I watched as that very film won 7 Oscars including best picture. I can't wait to see it. I did see the winner in the short film category, 'An Irish Goodbye.' a sweet and very moving tale and only 20 minutes long.

Concluding chapter (16) of THE HIGH AND THE HUMBLE in situ.

Everything everywhere is a brilliant film. see it - it deserved all the wins. And An Irish Goodbye was wonderful - i managed to watch all the live action shorts and that was my pick for a winner (followed closely by The Red Suitcase). it really was a magical piece of film making. smile

And Michelle Yeoh! Yay! She's a wonderful actress who can do just about anything in my experience. Drama, action, comedy. She even played a villain on Star Trek : Discovery (who was supposed to get her own spinoff at one point but that seems to have dropped off Paramount-CBS's radar).

Halloween looms and my annual story is here. Is it a trick? Or a treat? Let me know.

i wonder if, after her win, it might drop back onto the radar? smile

Who knows? Discovery is done after the next season so maybe they'll need a replacement, eh.

I finally watched Hot Tub Time Machine. Really funny and surprisingly sweet.

it felt at times they were trying to cram in all the tropes that would appeal to the Oscar voters.

God, I hate movies that are blatant Oscar bait. Make a movie based on the story and characters and let the awards come if they come. Some of my favorite movies would never get within a mile of an Oscar but are much better movies, IMHO, than some of the movies made with award potential in mind.

Look up the s-f movie The Quiet Earth. Marvelous, moody, character-driven post-apoc story with only a few, very pointed and relevant sfx.

I can't remember the last movie I watched but I was excited to hear they are making a new Beetlejuice movie. Michael Keaton is reprising his role as is Winona Ryder. Jenna Ortega will be playing her daughter and Monica Belucci plays Beetlejuice's wife.

Really gonna try to see the new animated Spiderverse movie this week. I LOVED the first one. Edibles will be involved...

To Catch a Killer with Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelson.

"Baltimore. New Year's Eve. A talented but troubled police officer (Shailene Woodley) is recruited by the FBI's chief investigator (Ben Mendelsohn) to help profile and track down a disturbed individual terrorizing the city."

It was okay but nothing new. I like the two main actors, so I gave it a shot.

We saw No Hard Feelings with Jennifer Lawrence. Oddly sad (especially Jennifer's character), and only occasionally funny, but I did like it. Maybe wait for streaming, but it's pretty good.

Jenna seems to be becoming the go-to actor for young women in creepy stories. First Wednesday Addams and now this.

I am getting rather intrigued by Last Voyage of the Demeter. It is a Dracula movie but focusses on one part of the novel that sometimes does not even make it into other adaptations: The fate of the ship that transports Dracula and his supply of boxes (i.e. coffins) to England from Transylvania. Very creepy looking vampire and the scenario (monster stalking the crew on a storm-tossed ship) seems ripe for a locked room horror a la Alien or The Thing. And apparently the director's last movie, Trollhunter, is quite good, too.

Recent trailer:

I am looking forward to this movie as well. I love all things Dracula. But I have avoided Renfield with Nicolas Cage. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I watched "The Deepest Breath" on Netflix about two freedivers. I have always been fascinated with that sport. It was an interesting emotional watch.

I found the trailers for Renfield offputting. It feels like Cage is playing it for laughs and doing his usual psycho over-the-top schtick. He'd actually be better as Renfield and that's who I thought he would play when I first heard he was in it.

I thought the same thing. Why wasn't he playing Renfield? My favorite Rendfield will always be Tom Waits in Coppola's version. I didn't realize for a long time that it was Tom Waits.

I'm debating if I should go and see Oppenheimer. It's not exactly a feel-good movie, and it's long. A friend told me there is an app that will tell you which parts of the film are boring, and you can sneak in a bathroom break since they don't do intermissions anymore. I think apps may have gone too far, lol.

Yeah, he doesn't act much but is actually pretty good when he does. The casting in that version was a real mixed bag. Keanu was a bad choice for Jonathan (would have been good for Quincey, I think) but Oldman and Hopkins were terrific, as was Waits.

That is one of my favorite adaptations.

I watched "The Pope's Exorcist" on Netflix with Russell Crowe. It was okay, a typical horror possession movie. The interesting part was that it is based on a real-life exorcist. I'm going to look up some of his books.

Mine, too, though I'm meh on the "Mina is Dracula's long-lost love's reincarnation/doppelganger" element. That's actually lifted from Dan Curtis' TV version starring, of all people, Jack Palance as Dracula. But so many scenes in the Coppola hit closer to the book (he kept all the vampire hunters for one thing, something that very few adaptations have done) and, as I said, Oldman and Hopkins tearing up the screen in their roles was a delight.

And? Would a fan of the two originals and the Real Ghostbusters animated series like it? Did it hit the mark? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, I think so. I did. It is a reasonable continuance of the originals, given the time that has elapsed.

Ferrari. It was not bad but not as good as Rush or Le Mans 66.

I am still trying to figure out how I feel about Poor Things. It was very different.

I also watched The Marsh King's Daughter. It was okay, but nothing original or any stand-out acting or writing.
