Today is the 14th anniversary of the mass shooting on the Virginia Tech campus 32 people died and 23 were injured.
Seems like April has a lot of tragedy anniversaries in it.

Do Americans know about the Ecole Polytechnique Massacre in Montreal in 1989? 14 dead. All were women. The killer was specifically targeting women. We are still commemorating that one (Dec. 16, I think) over 30 years later. Kind of puts the lie to Canada being the place where these things don't happen. They do, just not as often.

Hi everyone.

Mass shootings are a subject I follow. Most Americans do not realize how prevalent they are. As of April the 15th, there has been 24 mass shooting in the US in April alone. This April, 40 have died, including 4 of the shooters, and 94 have been wounded. That is more than 1 mass shooting a day. 5 of the shootings involve more than 6 people, and the latest was in Indianapolis with 9 dead, including the shooter, and 5 injured. No country in the world even comes close to this level of gun violence. The worst thing about it is that I do not know of any simple solution to this problem.

Not all April memories are bad. Yesterday was Jackie Robinson Day. All the players wear his number 42 on their jerseys on that date. He was a great player and a great person, much as Hank Aaron was. Aaron passed away last winter.

BTW Carlos Rodon pitched a no-hitter on the 14th. His perfect game was ended in the 9th inning with one out. He hit a batter on the foot, and that was his only baserunner of the game.

I will get some green tea to go as my wife just got home from work, and I need a hug.
A play. Wish I could go to one of Larry's plays.

Would you rather go to a baseball game or a hockey game?
Wish granted, but it is the wild, wild west of Fordwich, the smallest township in the UK, in east Kent.
Why would you want to be a hero in the wild west when you are already a hero to us at Stories Space?

I wish I could be in a Star Trek episode.
Sorry, neither. The only mustards I care for are spicy.

WYR go to a regular play or a dinner theater?
Hi Jack. I am glad you decided to drop by and say hi to the gang.

I have read a few of Jack's (JPemment1) stories on his website. They were quite good.

I watch the Cubs and Whitesox games the morning after they play due to blackout restrictions on MLB-TV. If you remember, please do not spoil the games for me. The Cubs are hosting the Braves for the next three days. Do not worry if you mention the games before I watch them. I will watch them in the evening instead. By then I probably will have forgotten. Yes, my short-term memory is that bad.

I have caught up with my in-box reading and I enjoyed all the stories.

I hope no one will object if I bring my cats, Bubblegum and Butterscotch, with me sometime in the future.

I will treat myself with a cuppa Earl Grey today, then I will be off. Have a great day, my friends.

Verbal posted some less than positive thoughts on some new MLB rules changes. Which brings up the obvious question of whether old buddy Jeff and any other baseball fans have ever had a positive thought about any rules changes? ;

Later, Inspirators. .

I liked adding the first Wild Card spot for the playoffs. The larger bases thing, which hasn't happened yet, is to make baserunning easier, which I agree would be a good thing. And I actually LIKE the shift because it results in a lot more strategy, both offensively and defensively.

In other news: I got an appointment for my first shot on Friday!

All baseball rules are bad, in the eyes of most baseball nerds. It is a knee-jerk reaction. All the rule changes through the years I have come to enjoy, except the DH. (I spit at the creators of that travesty) I understand the reasons for the new extra-inning runner rule. I'm not too fond of the 7-inning doubleheaders, though. It is a way to charge fans for 18 innings of baseball fun and only give them 14 innings, especially with today's prices. I do wish they would add another wild card spot in both leagues.

Wait until you see some of the rules being tested in the minor leagues this year. Jeff, one of the minor leagues, will be trying a no-shift rule. Every infielder must be touching the infield dirt and, with four or more infielders, two must be on each side of second base.

Glad to hear of your appointment, Jeff. I am hoping all my friends on Stories Space receive their shots soon.

BTW I actually posted a poem. I rarely get poetry right, but some domestic disturbances in the house inspired this one.

It would be nice if we had enough readers to score the stories to reach the magical ten scores. It was not that long ago that a good story would receive at least 20-25 votes as a minimum, or is my memory lying to me again?

I checked, and we have had 98 members active this month. Maybe 20-30 of those joined and never returned. That still leaves about 70 members. Are they not reading any stories or reading but not scoring?

If you are a writer, you should be helping your fellow writers on Stories Space. Comments always helped me to improve, thanks to the helpful criticism I would get.

<steps off the soapbox> Some green tea, please, and some grapes I brought. I have enough for everyone, so help yourself.

Good evening my friends,

I will have some mint tea today.

Yesterday's visit and dinner with my oldest offspring and his wife was great.

Scott, you should try golf. It was my favorite sport that I sucked at. It is one of the only sports that has an advantage for being bad. You get to hit the ball more times. If my friend and I played 18 and I shot 100 compared to their 85, we paid the same price, but I got 15 more swings. That is great!

Do not worry about the Nationals. They have a good team. They are just short-handed because they screwed up their Covid-19 protocols.
Today I watched a story on Vox YouTube concerning how, even after all the post-apartheid changes, little has actually changed about segregation and economic opportunities in South Africa. After further research online, including information and statistics from the South African government, it seems that very little has changed in practical terms. It has only been a little more than half a century since the last 'Jim Crow' racist laws were overturned in the US, and race relations are much better but still are far from perfect. It seems that it will take several generations in South Africa to have meaningful reforms, but I hope they are on the right path. Growing up during the later years of the Civil Rights era has made me appreciate the great strides we have made in America and how much work still remains.

Looking at South Africa's situation has given me a chance to evaluate our progress, usually two steps forward and then one step back, in the US.
Thank you, Bill! Your postings of submission opportunities are always welcome. I assume that the Haiku form they are looking for is based on syllables and not kireji.
Hi everyone!

I am spending today at my oldest son's house. We are going out to dinner, my first night out in more than a year, when his wife gets home. It feels so good to be able to do this since now I am vaccinated.

Cubs got crushed yesterday 8-2 by the Pirates, the weakest team in the majors. BTW Larry, Musgrove was not a mediocre pitcher, he was brought up to the majors earlier than he should have and pitched for a weak team. He has always been considered a true prospect. It is really nice to see him blooming into the pitcher he is capable of being. I hope he continues to do well throughout the season.

Green tea, hot, for me. No cookies, I have put on about 10 pounds this month.
Well, I am back. What, no one noticed?! Your vacation from my nonsense is over until it happens again, and it will.

Roland's mind went on vacation for about a week, and it has taken a few days to recover. The LBD is in its late fourth stage and slipping into early 5th stage of the disease. I can not complain. I was initially diagnosed to enter the seventh stage in 2017, which usually ends with death in 6-9 months. I am literally living on borrowed time and loving it. Days of not really existing will become more common and last longer from now on. I went almost a month with only minor lapses, and that is unusual. BTW, the week of bad time may have started because I got dehydrated. How could that happen? I was drinking lots of tea here in the breakroom.

I have been watching many baseball games, but only the last three days are in my memory. I did go back and watch the highlights. Some great stuff like watching the excellent fielding centerfielder for the White Sox misjudge a fly ball, and the ball bounced off his head into rightfield for a three-base error. It is too early to worry about your teams' records. I do not start paying serious attention until the end of April. Too bad the Washington Senators missed several games and have had to start the season without many of their best players due to Covid-19 concerns. I was looking forward to seeing if Schwarber could step up to the next level with Washington. If he does, he becomes one of the best offensive players in baseball.

I have a significant backlog of stories to catch up with my reading; I will be starting tomorrow.

Political joke: What do you call the 50% of white Republicans who say they will not take the Covid-19 vaccine? Evolution in motion.

Till tomorrow stay healthy and happy, my friends.

P.S. My wife and I are going to watch 'Godzilla vs. Kong' next week.
Hi all.

A note for those of you from my generation, Beverly Cleary, a contemporary of Dr. Seuss, passed away Thursday. She wrote many children and teen books, including the 'Henry Huggins' series, several books based on the 'Leave it to Beaver TV show, and my favorite 'Fifteen.' I grew up learning to read with her. She will be missed.

Till later, my friends.

I'm getting pretty excited myself about opening day. Juan Soto. Just sayin'. The Nats don't always reach their potential but every year it a new start and new beginning. With fervent hope.

That is what makes baseball so great. The nature of the sport (injuries, trades, inconsistent players through a daily grind of 162 games in approximately 185 days) makes it possible for almost any team to make the play-offs.
By the end of spring training, most players do believe their team could come out on top. Here are my predictions for 2021: {projected wins - projected wins are +/- 3}

NL East - 1st Mets {92}, 2nd Braves {91}, 3rd Nationals {84}, 4th Phillies {81}, 5th Marlins {70}
NL Central - 1st Cubs {88}, 2nd Cardinals {86}, 3rd Reds {83}, 4th Brewers {82}, 5th Pirates {58}
NL West - 1st Dodgers {102}, Padres (92}, 3rd Diamondbacks {76}, 4th Giants {73}, 5th Rockies {63}

AL East - 1st Yankees {95}, 2nd Blue Jays {87} and Rays {87}, 4th Red Sox {79}, 5th Orioles {64}
AL Central - 1st White Sox {91}, 2nd Twins {88}, 3rd Indians {79}, 4th Royals {73}, 5th Tigers {66}
AL West - 1st Athletics {88}, 2nd Astros {87}, 3rd Angels {85}, 4th Mariners {74}, 5th Rangers {66}

Cubs beat the White Sox in 6 games during the World Series! (that is the Cubbie in me speaking, in reality, the White Sox will beat the Dodgers in the World Series)

My gosh... I am such a baseball geek.
Granted... but since Stanley Unwin is dead then no one will be able to understand your stories

I wish I had six fingers on one hand so I could flip-off two people at once.
I am up early this morning, so I will get the coffee and tea kettle started. Brought some donuts and bagels. The cream cheese and honey are right here too.
Got a special treat for everyone. My daughter-in-law, Melissa, made my favorite, German chocolate cake. So, everyone enjoy.
Where did all the cookies go? Jeff, you cookie bandit, what have you done?

Watching the Cubs-Dodgers game from last night. They are starting the 4th inning and both pitchers are throwing perfect games!

My two kittens, Bubblegum and Butterscotch, have learned to jump up on my lap while I am at the computer. They like to jump up on the keyboard.

Everyone have a good day.
Granted... but instead of the beautiful Venus, the doctor aboard, you will be the transparent robot co-pilot. Then we will be able to see the tremendous size of your heart as well as your brain.
Fireball XL-5 was my favorite show as a first grader.

I wish I could have an at-bat during spring training!

I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ever have to go? ('I Wish' - - Stevie Wonder)
Hello everyone!

I am flipping back-and-forth between writing here and watching last night's Cubs game. Bill, there is no bigger baseball fan than me!

I'm glad Bill mentioned Landon Marceaux of LSU. Liz, being a Cajun, has me keep up with her Tigers, and he was seen as a future phenom back in his Freshman year in 2019 with a 90 MPH fastball and a good curveball. Last year he did OK but only got four starts due to the NCAA shutting down baseball because of Covid-19. He can hit 93 MPH and has now improved his slider. If he does not get hurt, he could easily be drafted this year as a junior.

Today I am starting a new routine. The weather is finally good enough for me to spend time outside on my porch, so I'll be spending 30-45 minutes a day out there reading after dinner. I am hoping it will help me relax.

I am joining Bill with my tea so he can explain the new baseball rules this year to me.
Granted... now you are capable of reading the word 'properly' as well as the rest of us.

I wish I could be an astronaut.
My usual green tea, please, and I brought a dozen glazed donuts.

After the Colorado shootings, I made my yearly pilgrimage through government and law enforcement data to remind myself how foolish America is concerning guns.
The ten killed in the Boulder, Colorada shooting increases the number of mass shooting victims in the US to 500 this year. Maybe someday, the American culture will begin to mature from adolescence.

I'm delighted to see that your recovery is going so well, Larry.

When my back flares up, I have found spending one extra day in bed prevents reinjuring or straining my back, so be careful, Jeff.

Watch over that sweet little angel of yours, Sharon; they could save the world someday. I am glad they are feeling better.

Bill, my prayers go out for your great-grandkids. Just think, someday you can tell them what it was like before the invention of fire.

I am almost through with a piece I want to share with you all. I hope I can finish it soon so that Liz can check it for me.
Granted... but you are too big to fit into the toaster; besides, you are out of butter to slather upon your brown self.

I wish I were as funny as Bill the Rumpled.
Granted... but you will be thoroughly bored.

I wish my wife would quit snoring.
