My heart is broken. To have this massive destruction to an icon of human endeavor is hard to absorb. And I agree with "hooray" to our first responders and the brave fire fighters that work in such dangerous conditions and so selflessly. I can only imagine the shock and pain to so many people around the world, and especially of course, those from France.

Don't be heartbroken... all is not lost. The main facade is intact (made of solid stone) and that includes the two big bell towers. The bells too appear safe; they would have been irreplaceable. The side walls, also stone, seem intact. They date back to before 1250.

The iconic spire is gone but that was never part of the original cathedral having been added in 1844 or thereabouts. It was mostly timber and lead so no wonder it went up like a bonfire blazing. It will be restored and, hopefully, in more robust materials.

The restoration that was going on seems to have saved the bronzes, the statues having been removed along with some of the art work so as to not be in the way. Sadly, probably all of the remaining art will have been lost. Most of those pictures are too big for any firefighter to carry out alone.

For me the greatest loss will be the stained glass, especially the windows. But there are artisans today who can copy stained glass windows from pics with utterly amazing accuracy. Of course it will not be the same but for most it will suffice.

Watch Notre Dame rise from the ashes. France needs a pick me up, Paris especially, soooo ... 'from the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success'.

God moves in mysterious ways... and this restoration could just be what Paris needs to distract itself from the men and women with automatic weapons that lurk in doorways and, nonchalantly, roam the streets because it is deemed Paris is not safe and, sadly, not what it used to be.

Thoughts and prayers for the firefighter reported as seriously injured.

Sharing thoughts from his Guest Book Of Remembrance ...

'The colours across the fashion world dim today as we mourn the loss of one of its most iconic leaders. There will never be another like him... '

'A man with much to say about his profession, how it should be done, why it should be done, and who should do it... '

'Adieu sweet man, never au revoir. You told me once that "what the world sees, and what is, are never the same". So it was with you, the kindest ever of souls, kissed by God with a talent that, like you, will be remembered forever... '

Karl Lagerfeld ... 30th September 1933 ... until today.
Today, Tuesday 19th February 2019 one of the most wonderful men that ever lived passed away.

In his world, where to be gay was acceptable but to be kind hearted was not, he hid his true self from all but a few. He was the kindest of souls, the most intelligent and caring of men.
Wonderful people leave wonderful legacies. His will both sad and wonderful, wonderful that his legacy will be style and its personification, sad that his character will be the subject of conjecture for ages. I owe him sooo much, God bless.

At least the world will remember him as a genius, but he was so much more.

All my love Karl and God's speed to Jacques.

Good morning. It is Negative 3 degrees F here at the momoent. That is about negative 19 degrees C. That was a fun little walk with the pup.

I'm waiting for the coffee to brew.

When we moved from a small town to our townhome in a college town I was ruthless with getting rid of things. I was not about to move all of the stuff we had accumulated. I hauled off five Plymouth Voyager mini-van loads of things we both agreed we didn't want. It was surprisingly easy to do.

But I can see how hard it is for people who get attached to things.

Oh well. Cheers.

If I got rid of all the stuff I have accumulated and kept only what was necessary for life, I would be adrift in an ocean of shoes! ... oh! and bags .. need bags with shoes

Has there ever been a consideration of updating the badges here on StoriesSpace to reflect reality? For instance, instead of needing 30,000 views to achieve a Famous story might the threshold be something more realistic for this site? Perhaps 2,500 or so? And might we also consider changing the other badges to show the same reality? It's just a thought. I wasn't aware if that had ever been considered before. The way it is now I would think some badges may never be achieved.

Does anyone have an opinion?

Not sure if this post (24th May, 2017) was the first discussion here on this topic but it was certainly the post that started the ball rolling so to speak.

Whether you believe in the badge concept or not, what has now been accomplished is awesome and all Members should be congratulating Maggie and her crew for seeing this through. I have no idea how Gav ever found the time to do this; he is just a phenomenom.

Way more important than the badge update is what it signifies. It signifies a commitment to the site by the powers that be, a commitment that many Members had thought was gone. Many believed that, given the activity elsewhere, perhaps stories space was just being left to wither away.

Sometimes it is just sooooo wonderful to be gloriously wrong!.

Now the Site has demonstrated its commitment to its Members its time for all Members to reciprocate, by writing more here and each introducing say one new Member a month?

We can do that you know.

I'm still waiting for at least two new badges to get applied to my profile. I'm sure that is simply because Gav has other more important chores to attend to. I'm looking at getting the Famous Story and the Millionaire's Club badges soon.

Of all the accolades that can be awarded I think that the Millionare's Club Badge is absolutely the most awesome. Huge congrats on that award.

Coffee, please. Quality auditor will be here within the hour. This is my only chance to breathe and prepare for his visit. Wish me luck that there isn't a non-conformance to be found. I'm ready for the struggle.tKHUA3T5p9DhOjyW
