Still debating pies but these have to be included I am told. Anyone who requests something has to make something.

Apple
Pumpkin
Pumpkin Cheese (Basically a cheesecake on the bottom topped with pumpkin pie)
Apple Pumpkin with a Streusel Topping
Triple Berry Pie
Lemon Meringue Pie (It doesn't really go with the holiday but it is my Dad's favorite)

I'll have a Cocoa Cola Please. Extra Cold with ice.

I know it's a coffee shop but I brought a box of cocktail umbrellas to liven up the non-coffee drinks. I hope no one minds.

Ahem!
Don't forget ... Steak & Mushroom and the all time fav Mince & Cheese.
My actual fav is Potato Top .. when they use real potatoe that is.

Just back from some weekend shopping. I got a large chrysanthemum. To plant in the area around my sycamore in front. It will fill in a gap next to other mums.

All the other groceries and sundries are put away so I could use a cuppa java, if you please, while I listen to French cafe music.

Cheers, all.

You brought a tear to my eye... you must play TAPESTRY... you will understand.. most here won't.
What a legacy he left on the cafe scene here in France.

Do you mean Tapestry by Carole King? That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

I expect they serve cocoa here if the machine has hot water to make the instant stuff.

Don't know much about Carol King sorry, although I know she is a rage from the past as a song writer/singer. Is 'Tapestry' the name of an album by her?.

Not all French Cafes blurt out accordian music 24 hours. Some even have DJ's at night, especially at the weekends. I do rather like accordian music though and if you are really deeply immersed do you listen to Swiss and Bavarian? Especially the latter.

Back to Paris ... late night over an over heavy Bordeaux or coffee and cognac you can find a softer more melancholy background...

The 'Tapestry' I spoke of is by Charles Aznavour.. it's actually called 'A Tapestry Of Dreams' ... my uncle gave me it when he was clearing out his old vinyls. I have only really listened to the French and German ones .. plus a few Greek. He parted with over 1600 of them .. I should look for Carole King?

Oh, what a shame. Charles Aznavour just passed away. I did love his work. He was a protege of Edith Piaf, I think. I have one of her songs here on my profile (Non, je ne regrette rien) and one of his, as well (La bohme). Carole King was a songstress for my generation in the 70s. Tapestry is an album and a song on that album.

Yes at the beginning of last month. Not much fuss in the US I guess... but here and Internationally he was revered. The French speaking countries held their big meet in Armenia and the international media never missed an opportunity to reference Charles Aznavour and his Armenian heritage... made the coverage interesting at least!

Back to accordian musique ... you might like to check out Andre Verchuren for Parisienne and continental flavours... 'Les fiances d'Auvergne" is awesome, also 'Accordeon Poete'. If you can skip the singing then Florian Silbereisen you might enjoy. He was a child prodigy (I'm told) on the accordian. Bavarian of course.

Tapestry is a great album! My sister had it – I was a little young yet, but nevertheless nearly wore it out.

Really? .. Now I will def look for it. Lot of rummaging to do this morning biggrin

What was the conference like? I have never been to one.

POSSESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am possessed by this incredible urge to put up the Christmas tree and decorate.. 'deck the halls' and all that stuff.
I wonder if this awesome thread should have it's own topic space rather than being part of the Break Room or anything else for that matter?????

Too cold and wet. We get a brief respite from the latter tomorrow, and it's iffy for the rest of the week.

Just a big bonfire then?

I think it's only right we celebrate the memory of Guido (Guy) Fawkes. Afterall he was the first man to enter a Parliament with the right idea biggrin

Pumpkin spice belongs in pumpkin pie. In coffee or tea it's just a weird chai and I'd rather have a proper Indian chai.

(I'm a bit of a grump, aren't I?)

That said, we have both hot caffeinated beverages in that flavour for those who like it. Hey, this place is virtual. If you want a flavour, it exists.OXKhoTZXbgJLr73T

Cooooool.... had this once... it's chai tea ice cream! ... wait... we do have ice cream don't we????

Is it alright to post pics? ... or are we 'conversational' only????

The aroma of coffee wafts about my bookshop. Coffee of month the being, Pumpkin Spice. My wife's parents are coming down from Canada to spend the Holidays with us. This will be their first time in America. It should be fun and inspirational. Remind to tell you how I met my wife. Now a citizen with a French accent.

Pumpkin Spice?????

Now you must tell us how you met your wife sweet man.

It would seem that this thread has become a forum on whether badges should even exist, or not. It's clear from their profiles that Gav and Nicola were members since July 2010. They originated the site. I see that Maggie joined in October of that year. I would suggest that badges were part of this site from the beginning. Those members could verify that.

Badges were here when I joined in 2012. I never became a member to get badges. That is completely silly to even think so. But they are nice to have. What is the problem with having a little encouragement for the members that join our site? I mean, really, what is a valid argument against having just a little bit of recognition for members who achieve a bit. I'm so discouraged when something like this degenerates into a foolish argument against giving a member or two a few accolades or extra credit for a certain amount of acheivement.

I believe I've said enough about this. I think I will just bypass this thread for now. I'm sorry I ever brought up the subject of updating the badges. It just makes me sad.

Please don't be sad. You did ask for opinions and you started quite a passionate discussion which is quite something for this site. So I think you should feel proud rather than sad.

I agree with Al about badges. If you are a writer you should write only for yourself. Whilst everyone wants to be successful we all know that recognition for an author is an elusive thing. So why seek it?. If you are content with what you write then everything else is a bonus. If it's posted here, or anywhere, that's a plus. If someone takes time, their most precious possession, to read it... that's a compliment and a half. If they didn't like it? So what, you wrote it for yourself and you liked it or they would not have had the pleasure or otherwise. So for some of us accolades are great but not fretted over.

However, we are in the minority. The majority here like the badges, as witnessed by the majority of 'for' posts.

If, as argued in posts above, badges attract members and are also an incentive to contribute, then that is a separate matter. We all seek somewhere to display our work and when/where we can we should wholeheartedly help foster that site and support those that support us. If badges are deemed a positive promotional tool then badges there shoud be.

How to determine the worth of a badge?. I have no idea. I write only poetry, across three sites, two of which award badges. (Stories are an art form I have yet to master and I salute/envy those who have that skill). On one site there are 300,000+ members. There, poetry offerings are split into two distinct catergories. Badges for poetry and stories are awarded on the same basis, i.e. equal value, even though the readership for poetry is, as it is everywhere in life, less than that for stories. For a Famous Story Badge (story or poem) you need 30,000 reads. I do not know how many Famous Story Badges have been awarded to stories since that site's inception 12 years ago, but if I am not mistaken, only eight have been awarded for poetry. The poems and stories, however, keep coming despite the same conversation over badges being raised there from time to time and the need for, perhaps, a Famous Poem Badge awarded, given the traffic, for less 'reads' than wins a Famous Story Badge.

As I said, I have no idea how to rate a badge, but I do believe the bar should be set high rather than low. And if poems have to compete driectly against stories for accolades, so be it. From my point of view I am happy to have someone publish mine, anywhere.

As for competitions? If the site has the resources to organise and run a comp then how special is that?! Personally I think a story comp every two months might be a bit much for everyone, maybe three or four a year? Same for poems. I find it interesting in comparing the latest comp on this site with the latest on the 300,000+ site I mentioned above, that both had a similar number of entries. Well done storiesspace!
