If you're looking for a new book to read, how do you choose which one you're going to read next? Does the cover have much of an influence over your decision? Do you stick with authors you know and love or do you often try writers you've never read before? Which genres appeal to you the most?
I'm currently reading Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay. It's the first time I've read one of his books and the story grabbed my attention from the beginning.

I'm enjoying the way he writes. It's similar to Harlan Coben's style.

Is that all right? Is it safe to assume you'd prefer an 18+ piece not be linked to one that's rated G?

Thanks!

This question hasn't come up before, but that's a good rule to go by. If somebody's reading one of your 13+ pieces and they click through to another one of your poems, they'll at least see the new rating at the top of the new page, so they can opt if that's what they want.

Thank you for checking, Maggie! smile

The link to the contest page doesn't seem to work for me.
(the link miss a : after the http)

Thanks for pointing it out, Mandsi. I've fixed the link.

Four entries already!
Rosehip and hibiscus tea (trying it for the first time). I have to say, I'm not a fan!
We've just launched our latest writing competition, this time with the theme "New Beginnings". Stories, poems and songs may cover any of the genres and you can submit as many entries as you like. As an added challenge, stories must also include either one or both of the following objects: a family heirloom and/or a set of keys.

The competition closes on March 12, 2012. Please check out the contest page for further details.

Looking forward to reading all your entries! Good luck!
If you have trouble eliminating unnecessary words you might find this short article helpful.

It's interesting how much writing has changed over the years. It definitely seems to be a case of less is more these days.

Soon an author is supposed to write a story in an hour.

I like the idea of that. Imagine the pressure!
Do you ever wonder how to include numbers in your story, such as a character's age? This article helps explain when to use the number itself and when to spell it out in words.

Gav, it seems like almost everyone's rank has been changed to forum guru, regardless of the number of postings.

After a quick look around it appears to be working okay. I've noticed lots of forum gurus but they all have over 100 posts.
This article explains how to use "lie", "lay" and "laid" correctly.

The difference between "affect" and "effect" is explained here.

If you have any others to add, feel free to post!
Congratulations, Alan!

The cover looks great. Have you got a copy yet? I noticed the three reviews it has so far are from people who have poems in the book. Do you like the way they presented your poem?

Hey Gav...I seemed to have stopped getting e-mail notifications when I get a message here...I noticed it yesterday, and thought maybe it was my imagination, or that I had deleted them and forgot...you know how us seniors get...

But...it seems to be the same case today...so, maybe I'm not that crazy after all...OK, maybe...

Someone else mentioned that to me as well. He said they stopped working for him yesterday.

Gav, moderators also aren't able to change ratings (EC to 18+ etc) on stories once they've been chosen. I just tried to change one of them and it stays the same.
