An interesting version, Molly, but I have to say, I prefer this...

Just been catching up on Canadian power metal band Unleash The Archers. While they are from Victoria, BC, they are signed with Napalm Records, an Austrian label specializing in metal so I found them while exploring European metal bands. This is a cover of a favorite of mine by the late Canadian folk singer-songwriter Stan Rogers.

Really evocative interpretation of Northwest Passage, and what a voice she has!

So many events that have happened (including his tragic death in 1983) since Stan Rogers wrote and performed the song, leave much to think about.

This is a video with his performance of the song, against an excellent archival montage of images and god I hope I've linked it correctly.

There are clips of him performing the song near the last 90 seconds or so.

One thing I have really grown to appreciate about the modern metal scene is the proliferation of strong female voices.

As for the song, I once used Northwest Passage in a church service (Stan's original recording in that case) many years ago. The theme was spiritual exploration and something felt right about it. I was UU in those days so had a lot of leeway on stuff like this.

Right now, I am listening to another metal band with a strong female vocalist, Italian goth metal band Lacuna Coil. The band's female singer (there's also a male lead) Cristina Scabbia is on of the oldest and best of the female metal singers.

Well, if we are talking Gordon Lightfoot, this is probably my favorite of his songs.

I love songs that tell a story. Like this one by Roger Whittaker.

Ah, good old Roger. I saw him live many years ago. Parents and I were fans back then. And I love that song. Another good story song from an old favorite:

And there's Gary Moores "Over the Hills and Far Away". You know which cover I am going to post, though, right?

Metallica Blacklist takes the 12 tracks on the band's classic "Black Album" (now 30 years old) and gives 50+ artists a crack at covering them. Proceeds are going to charity, including Metallica's own foundation. The artists range from the unexpected (Miley Cyrus doing a surprisingly good rendition of "Nothing Else Matters") to bands who are very much what you would expect on a Metallica tribute. E.g. this one, one of my favorite Metallica songs, from Swedish band Ghost.

Nice. And yet another strong female lead. Reminds me a bit of The Dark Element (Anette's Olzon's last band).

I have become quite fond of Brazilian alto Violet Orlandi. Her take on Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, a favorite of mine from a while back, is quite different from the original but quite good in its own right.

Leaves Eyes. Chain of the Golden Horn.

I know someone who may be interested in this factoid. The singer, Elina Siirala, is a second cousin to Tuomas Hollopainen!

Indie singer-songwriter Kina Grannis managed to get her latest album out this week. She's close to giving birth to her first child so she got it released just under the wire. Minimalist music with lots of emotional content. Beautiful stuff.

Cute. Music does seem to run in families, eh (definitely does here in Canada where we have had multiple bands consisting of family members). Heavier than Nightwish, more of a power metal sound.

I blame Krispy for introducing me to a few of their tracks.

Mother and I love singing this one.
