Back to Nightwish. Marko joined in 2001, already an established figure in the European metal scene. He's in his fifties and started his first band with his brother back in the eighties. This song was co-written by Marko and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen (who writes the majority of the band's music) for a movie soundtrack. I love this live version with Nightwish's current lead singer Floor Jansen on harmonies.

Speaking of Floor...

I'm not that familiar with Lara Fabian's work (something I have long meant to rectify), but that song in Floor's hands ... magnifico!

...and speaking of Adagio...

I have only just discovered this. It is from the 1975 Renaissance album, Turn of the Cards. My all time favourite song is Northern Lights from the Song for all Seasons album.
A friend at the time told me that if I liked that album then I wouldn't like their others. Oh, how I wish I hadn't taken notice of him! If only YouTube had been invented then...

Annie Haslam had the most incredibly beautiful voice.

Any resemblance to Nightwish is not coincidental. The Dark Element is cut from the same cloth of Nordic symphonic metal and lead singer Anette Olzon fronted Nightwish from 2007 to 2012.

Not sure if I have raved about Lake Street Dive here as much as on my own board, but they dropped their new album and what an album it is. This bunch of New England Conservatory graduates blend styles like jazz, R&B, blues, and rock to come up with a sound that is very much their own. This single came out yesterday.

The whole sea shanty meme kind of passed me by. I saw the videos coming out but only listened to one or two and found it all kind of meh. But this version of "Wellerman", featuring three young female artists that I am familiar with through their regular gigs (2 are in bands, the third is solo), caught my eye. It is quite a good performance.

Whilst listening to "Wellerman" I found myself hearing a close similarity, although considerably slower, to the theme tune of a TV show I watched and enjoyed as a child.
Do you hear it too?

It is quite obvious in the chorus, eh. Per Wiki, "Wellerman" dates to the 1860s and given the proclivity of folk tunes to move freely from song to song, who knows what the relationship is? Maybe "Wellerman" used an existing tune that the writer of this song also used? Or maybe this one borrowed the tune?

One of the artists in there is Audra Miller of First to Eleven and Concrete Castles (former is a cover band, latter does original material). The latest Castles release hit last Thursday.

And a First to Eleven cover from a few months back. I had not heard the original but this got me to seek it out. I actually prefer this version.
