Really enjoying the music from Epica's (another band in the vein of Nightwish) new album Omega. Female lead singer Simone Simons packs a great voice. She's been fronting the band since she was 17, when it was founded by her then-boyfriend Mark Jansen (the male singer/growler in their songs). They've since split up romantically but remain bandmates.

Concrete Castles is a "new" (sort of) band from Erie, Pennsylvania. They are "sort of" new because the trio are also part of a long-running Erie-based band called First To Eleven that I discovered last year. F211 are mainly a cover band, Concrete Castles are kicking off with an original. Singer Audra Miller has a terrific voice for the kind of material (she teaches voice at a program called Rock School in Erie) they do and Matt Yost and Sam Gilman (guitar and drums respectively) are excellent musicians. I hope this band goes places. They've certainly worked hard in F211 to get this far.

When one hears the word 'Metal' when referring to music, what does it mean? Loud thrashing guitars, an insane drum beat and growling right? Of course, and quite rightly so, but it doesn't end there. Symphonic metal is a very different beast.
Many symphonic metal bands produce some very complex, almost orchestral music. One band, however, goes so much further. Yes, there are the loud electric guitars, insane drum beat and heavy rhythm, but they have also crossed into the world of classical music. Their latest album celebrates Humans and Nature.
The latter is a most beautiful suite that reflects the beauty and power of nature, in my opinion just as well as did Vivaldi and Copeland.
Have a listen. Sit back, close your eyes and enjoy the music of Tuomas Holopainen and Nightwish.

I listened to Endless Forms Most Beautiful and Human neutral|: Nature (their latest albums) recently and I honestly think Tuomas is sounding more like prog than metal now. There's stuff in there that I could easily hear coming from Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson. If it wasn't for Empu's guitar-playing being definitely in metal style, say if they had a guitar player more in the vein of Steve Howe or Robert Fripp, Nightwish could probably be considered to be at the rockier end of prog now. Not that I'm complaining. I'm a fan of Yes and prog in general going way back.

You even hear a bit of it in older stuff like Ghost Love Score. Empu, Marco, and Jukka are rocking out, but Tuomas' parts often wouldn't sound out of place on a Yes album.

And, damn, I miss Jukka in their newer material. What a drummer. Plays the kit well but also has a lot of character. Kai's good but doesn't really have the stage presence.

Keeping with the classical style, The London College of Music presents Imaginaerum. Conducted by Tuomas Holopainen and following the original music closely. I can easily imagine it played in The Royal Albert Hall.

Oo, I'll have to give that a listen. Some of these rock-classical things are iffy but with Tuomas himself involved, should be good.

Just discovered the Powerless Trio (obviously, a play on "power trio"). It's three Finnish metal stars doing some marvelous acoustic performances. The only one I knew before discovering this group was Marco Hietala of Nightwish (the blond bass player with the magnificent beard). "I See Fire" is from one of the Hobbit movies and whatever one might think of Jackson's films, this song is wonderful.

The intro is, unfortunately, in Finnish but based on another of their videos where Marko does the intro in English, I think he is just introducing the band members and the video.

I am a big fan of hers, so I am listening to the song you put up. You can not beat The Who. I have been following her YouTube channel for years.
