Today we celebrate the peach cobbler, a peach filled deep-dish fruit pie with a thick crust that is usually made of biscuit dough. Cobblers are named as such because of their rough look—they often look like they were cobbled together. There are various types of cobblers. Those in the South usually have a top and bottom crust. Fruit cobblers, such as peach, are most popular in the South as well. They are often topped with vanilla ice cream. Cobblers originated in the early years of America, and multiple sources say that National Peach Cobbler Day was created by the Georgia Peach Council in the 1950s, in order to sell canned peaches.

National Peach Cobbler Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on April 13th.

Animal-shaped cookies similar to animal crackers were being eaten in the United Kingdom in the 1800s. By the 1870s, animal crackers, which are a type of snack and not a brand, were being made in the United States. The Stauffer Biscuit Company started making them in 1871. The most popular brand, originally known as Barnum's Animals, began being made in 1902 by the National Biscuit Company (now known as Nabisco). They were named after P.T. Barnum and were sold in small packages that were designed to look like circus trains. The packages had a string at their top and were intended to be hung on Christmas trees. Now known as Barnum's Animals Crackers, they have been shaped into 37 types of animals throughout the years. In general, animal crackers are usually shaped into zoo or circus animals such as lions, tigers, bears, elephants, and monkeys.

Today is dedicated to the Velociraptor, a small, fast, bird-like dinosaur. There were two species of the dinosaur, the second of which wasn't identified until 2008. Their name comes from the Latin words "velox," meaning swift, and "raptor," meaning robber or plunderer. They were named by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924, who was president of the American Museum of Natural History. Fossils of the dinosaur were first found the year prior, in the Outer Mongolian Gobi Desert. More fossils have since been found in the Gobi desert in Mongolia and northern China.
Velociraptors were about the size of a small turkey and could weigh up to 33 pounds. They had three claws on each hand and could fold their arms against their body like birds. They had a sickle-shaped claw on a toe on each of their feet that helped them catch their prey, which was usually small animals, reptiles, and amphibians. In 2007, quill knobs were discovered, indicating they had had feathers. However, these feathers did not give them the ability to fly or guide.

NATIONAL OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING COMMEMORATION DAY
National Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day is on April 19 of each year in memory of the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist bomb attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. It remained the most destructive act of terrorism on American soil until the September 11, 2001, attacks. The blast in Oklahoma City claimed the lives of 168 people, including 19 children under the age of 6. More than 680 people were injured. (http://www.history.com/topics/oklahoma-city-bombing)

4/20 is, in short, a holiday celebrating marijuana.

Why April 20? There are a few possible explanations for why marijuana enthusiasts’ day of celebration landed on this day, but the real origin remains a bit of a mystery.

Steven Hager, a former editor of the marijuana-focused news outlet High Times, told the New York Times that the holiday came out of a ritual started by a group of high school students in the 1970s. As Hager explained, a group of Californian teenagers ritualistically smoked marijuana every day at 4:20 pm. The ritual spread, and soon 420 became code for smoking marijuana. Eventually 420 was converted into 4/20 for calendar purposes, and the day of celebration was born. (A group of Californians published documents giving this theory legitimacy, but it’s unclear if their claims are valid.)

NATIONAL JELLY BEAN DAY
National Jelly Bean Day is observed each year on April 22.
While candies made in a similar manner existed before the jelly bean, Boston confectioner William Schrafft made them popular during the Civil War. With their firm exterior, jelly beans were the first candies to be sold by the pound. Schrafft encouraged his customers to send them to Union soldiers.
During the 1930s, jelly beans became closely associated with the Easter holiday but are now enjoyed year round. Jelly Beans were Ronald Reagan’s favorite treat.
