I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

the Vancouver Canucks' fans have been very shockingly embarrassing ....... you would think that we would have been classier at losing the final game of the Stanley Cup to the team much more deserving ..... Congratulations to the Boston Bruins!!

next year - I am not going to watch a NHL game ...... no longer a fan as I don't want to be associated with those rioters!

And with saying that .... bring on the NFL season!! *grin*

Breaking Poetry News...

The New York Public Library has purchased the papers of Timothy Leary, reports The New York Times. Among the 335 boxes of papers, videotapes, photographs and more is correspondence from “Ginsberg, Aldous Huxley, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Charles Mingus, Maynard Ferguson, Arthur Koestler, G. Gordon Liddy and even Cary Grant—an enthusiastic LSD user.”...getting flashbacks just thinking about it...smile

Dear Lord... you know I never ask for much, but I really would appreciate 5 day weekends and longer days... an extra 6 hours will do (or if you can't do that, then make me need less sleep?).

And maybe just a tiny bit more self restraint so I spend less time chatting and more time writing.

Amen

“Many people hear voices when no one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.”

Finished my last final
The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me. ~Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead
I can't take credit for this poem, but some here may find it very touching...

A Woman's Poem

He didn't like the casserole
And he didn't like my cake,
He said my biscuits were too hard
Not like his mother used to make.
I didn't perk the coffee right
He didn't like the stew,
I didn't mend his socks
The way his mother used to do.
I pondered for an answer
I was looking for a clue.
Then I turned around and
smacked the shit out of him....

Like his mother used to do.

I love a good poem, don't you?!?!

Stories Space is back up and running...

Let's just say that there were more than a few people who had expressed concern...this was the longest anyone here can remember the site being down...

But, it's nice to know that everything is fine...and back to "normal"...whatever "normal" means anyhow...

Cheers,
Alan.

A big congratulations to Sprite and Xuani on their recent contest winnings...

Nice to see all my friends getting rich...

Now I know where to go when I need a loan...

My father and step-mother are selling their condo on the beach in North Carolina...

Anyone looking to buy a condo on the beach? If I could spare the extra change, I'd consider it...it is really very beautiful, I know, I've stayed there several times...the tenth floor balcony overlooks the ocean...very nice...

But this is very touching VanGogh, It brings back respect for Canadians and mankind, I feel.
The story behind it is inspiring.

I'm sorry, I couldn't load the photo. But it's the one where the couple was kissing in the midst of the riot.
The police knocked her down, so the young man (boyfriend) just layed down with her, and layed a big ole kiss on her.
I would vote it; pic. of the year.
There's a girl on another site which I know I can't mention...

She goes by the name of GrammarGirl9....

But anyway...she posts an almost daily blog of often useful writing advice in fairly concise form...she's also very helpful to beginning writers who need help...

Here's an example from a recent blog entry she posted...I thought there were a couple of good tidbits here...

MISTAKES THAT CAN LEAVE YOUR STORY DEAD IN THE WATER

The editor at the University of Chicago Press, led a workshop on changes in The Chicago Manual of Style: 16th Edition. It was brought out how important it is to be conscious of the latest change. The editor emphasized that, "Just a few grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors in your proposal can render it dead in the water before an editor or agent ever reaches the manuscript, using the latest style guidelines can communicate your professionalism as a writer and commitment to your craft." The following is a partial list of changes
that were covered at the workshop:

Chicago Manual of Style 16th Edition Changes

6.119 Commas following other punctuation marks are now allowed.

7.16, 17, or 18 Possessives. To maintain consistency, it was decided that possessives of all names, including names like Jesus and Moses, will end in 's (Jesus's, Moses's).

7.76 Website is now one word (website), and worldwide web is capitalized (Worldwide Web).

8.55 When referring to a specific mountain, river, street, etc., both/all words are capitalized (Chicago River, Illinois River, Blue Ridge Mountains).

8.153 Brand names don't need to follow standard capitalization style (ebay, iPod).

14.7 Access dates. Access dates are now allowed if no publication date is available.

5.220 There is a great list of word combinations to watch out for. Example: close proximity. This is noted as redundant.

2.133 Checklist for proofing electronic publications. Also includes how to communicate those proofing changes on an electronic file.

Congratulations to Cowgirl Brumby on her big offer of a book deal, e-book and print from a real publisher...

Is it too early to celebrate? Have all the contracts been signed? Lol...I just thought about your story "The Contract"...

Let us know when we can uncork the bubbly...
I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

Congrats to Cowgirl Brumby and Clarabelle for their recent story sales to Every Night Erotica, to Sprite and Xuani for their recent contest winnings over on the sister site, to Don Abdul and DirtyMartini for getting their stories in the most recent July issue of Bare Back Magazine, to Magnificent1Rascal for her recent Editor Pick right here on Stories Space, Cowgirl Brumby also got an offer from a publisher for an e-book and print deal...and I just found out today that my contest story The Birthday Party will be in the next issue of eFiction Magazine, the premier indie fiction magazine...did I miss anyone here on my friends list? And that's just in the last two weeks...nice to see everyone doing well here...

Warning!

There’s a dangerous Rascal on this site,
Who will try to tell you she’s always right,
She’ll tell you it’s day when it’s night,
She’ll tell you it’s black when it’s white,
It’s best to amuse her, don’t start a fight...
I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

The next few weeks will be a record for the number of submissions I'm waiting to hear back on...and some are potentially lucrative from a financial standpoint...

1. August 5, will be the results of this contest on Stories Space...$100 potential...

2. August 15 will be the results for the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest...I submitted "The Facebook Poem"...first prize is $1500 btw...I have my fingers and toes crossed on that one...

3. I sent in a poem titled "If I Should Forget" to Poetry Magazine on June 18...it is supposed to take 6 to 8 weeks to hear back...so, I should be hearing back about that soon...$300 potential there...

4. I sent three erotic stories to Rachel Kramer Bussel for an erotic romance short story compilation..."Dance Class"...an Editor Pick on the sister site, btw..."Is She Happier Without Me" and "Carnival Knowledge"...that's a potential $150 in the unlikely event she picks up all three...so far, she has rejected everything I've sent her...and I've sent her several stories since I started submitting stuff to paying gigs on September 7, 2010...

5. I sent in "The Birthday Party" to Short Story America for their Story Of The Week...I think that pays $100...should be hearing soon...

6. I have a total of nine stories that I sent to the erotic e-Zine Oysters & Chocolate that I'm waiting to hear back on...and I still haven't sent them anything this month yet, you can send three per month...in the unlikely event they want all nine, that would be a cool $90...they pay ten bucks a pop...
They bought two of my stories this year..."Morning In The Park" and "Getting A Raise"...they rejected eight so far...

I think that's it for now...hopefully something will come through...like they say though, "You have to be in it to win it"...

Cheers,
Alan.

On another note...Sara, aka RomanceGoddess here on Stories Space, sent me a note earlier today...apparently someone was so impressed by my poem *Accept Me As I Am* that they decided to steal it, change the title to "A Poem For You" and call it their own...

I should be flattered, eh? Lol...somebody noticed it, the poem is on her Romantic Ideas Online site as well...

Hi Alan,
Someone posted this on my site:

tinkerbell1986 has copied a poem which appears on this website http://www.facebook.com/l/fAQBRalB0AQCojkt1I-9Vkuzv8iAzwUshqL6_azWULVkS3A/www.protagonize.com/poem/a-poem-for-you

I think this is the same person that was stealing poems and stories and posting them on another story site I can't really mention...the name sounds familiar...

Not much you can really do about it though...btw, the poem was removed...so the link just goes right to the front page of the site...

A big congratulations to Lady Sharon on the recent sale of her story Surprise Party to Every Night Erotica...

Way to go Sharon...I'm sure this will just be one of many more...

You deserve a drink girl...

Cheers,
Alan.

I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

Oh, here we go again...a big congratulations to Yasmin, aka Sherzhad for her very well-deserved Editor Pick on her latest poem Silent Screams...

It seems like every time I turn around lately, someone on my friends list is either getting published in a magazine, selling a story, or winning an award...

Maggie Rascal got an Editor Pick recently...
Lady Sharon sold a story to Every Night Erotica, which just posted yesterday I believe...
Cowgirl Brumby also sold a story to ENE, in addition to getting a publishing deal...
Clarabelle sold two stories to Every Night Erotica recently...
Sprite won first prize in a story contest...
Xuani also won money in that contest...
Don Abdul got a story published in this month's issue of Bare Back Magazine...

I finally figured it out...being on my friends list is clearly good luck...

I'm getting tired of all the celebration parties though...getting too old for all this partying...take it easy on me people, stop being so good...

Congrats again to everyone...don't think I missed anyone, though I might have...hard to keep up lately...

Cheers,
Alan.
