I had a '52 Chevy POS with various shades of paint on the fenders and doors. Then a '61 Ford Fairlane. My first really decent car was a '63 Thunderbird convertible after I graduated.
My Dad's '82 Impala, when I could get it. We were a 1 car family so he got priority. I didn't actually own a car myself until I got married at 28.

In UK, high school ends at 16 and the youngest age to hold a driving licence is 17. My first car, however was a MkII Ford Cortina. I also, later, had a MkIII and a MkIV. Back then, Fords were a great car to drive and to own but now I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

Amen. Owned a '96 Taurus and a '97 Escort. Former had a bum transmission and the latter was rusting by the time I wrecked it. Been driving Hondas ever since without a serious issue.

I didn't have a car in high school. My mother had various cars at various times. I finally bought a car when I was in college. It was a used 1963 Ford Falcon. It was worthless.

When I worked for Singer Company, I traded a sewing machine for a '61 Ford Falcon. Maroon in color and in pretty good shape, but it broke down on the freeway and the cost to repair it was more than the car was worth.

And, yet, the 'Stang was originally built on the Falcon platform so something good came out of it, even if the Falcon itself was crap.

I had a '68 Mustang in the Navy. Hurst shifter... 289 4-barrel carb... glass-pack exhausts... it got me into a lot of trouble...
I didnt have a car in High school but once my feet could reach the peddles, when I was about 10, I started driving around the farm in a 109 series III Landrover pickup. I had to stand up to change gear, using both hands!!

1955 Ford Customline. Just like this one. It was a 6-Cylinder with 3 on the tree.
It had the nasty of habit of the drivers door opening suddenly when you made a right hand turn too hard!

Didn't I see that as a gag in a comedy once (a car door not staying shut)? And they say movies are unrealistic.

I don't think people under a certain age even know what 3 on the tree is. Everything is on the floor and has at least 5 gears nowadays (or don't have discreet gears as CVTs become more common).

My 20th forum post! I drove a 1974 Orange Datsun pick-up truck in High School - but my senior year I bought and drove a sparkling green street legal dune buggy made from a Volkswagen bug.
Didn't get my driver's license until I was nineteen, so... I guess you could say my high school vehicle was a commuter bus (here known as the TTC)

Oddly enough I was nineteen too, but I lived out in the country so no public transportation for me. Thank goodness my boyfriend and best friends drove me around.

The first car I got out of school was a 1992 Camaro Z28 Convertible 5.0L 5-speed. It was purple with a pink pinstripe.

Well, if we're talking my first car, that would be a green Mazda Protege. It drowned in a flood. sad

Pretty much every model of Monte Carlo from 74 through 77 , all through my early 20's. Those parts were interchangeable. I'd have 2 sometimes 3 around just for parts until I junked them.
I owned everything under the sun, considering how often they broker down. But the guys on my corner knew a guy with a 35 year old 1931 Plymouth which he would rive 18 miles each way to work every day (36 miles total). the thing that would make us laugh was the fact that he had only ONE gear!! That was LOW GEAR!!! So we gave him the nickname, "Johnny Low Gear!" That is a story I could not dream up it is so crazy. We all knew cars in those days, because we all owned clunkers and had to spend weekends fixing them. Sounds terrible, but to us, life was a blast!
Well, my son is now getting his first car and it is the one he drove in high school when he learned to drive, my 2015 Civic. I actually traded in an '04 Civic for the '15 because the '04 didn't have enough leg room for him (he's 6'4").

Going a little off tangent, my son recently had a minor accident but the damage was sufficient to write off his car (it was 16 years old). An old lady failed to give way. Nobody was hurt and she freely admitted liability.
The following Saturday, he and I drove many miles looking for a replacement, none of which were any good.
The next day, he rang me.
"Can you pick me up, I've found a car on Facebook!" he said. I asked him where it was. "Your next-door neighbour!" was the unexpected reply.
