Vaccination is arguably the most important medical intervention ever, not just because it protects the individual against infection but because if sufficient people are vaccinated it arrests the circulation of the infectious agent thus protecting those who were not or could not be vaccinated.

Without vaccination

* hundreds of thousands of people would still die each year from smallpox, even in rich countries
* infants would still die from diphtheria and whooping cough
* millions of children every year would suffer life changing paralysis caused by poliovirus
* up to a quarter of children catching measles would end up with hearing loss
* women would still be giving birth to infants with congenital rubella syndrome
* sexually active women would still run the risk of cervical carcinoma
* men who have sex with men would still run the risk of anal condylomata and cancer
* elderly people could still develop excruciatingly painful shingles
* children and teenagers would continue to die of meningitis
* elderly people would die more frequently from pneumonia, often slowly
* life expectancy at birth would fall back to levels seen 100 years ago

The list could go on and on. The only way to ensure that you didn’t run any risk of infectious disease and its consequences would be to live a life of total isolation from other people and certainly never to have sex. Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics and antiviral therapy is still in its infancy and only really useful for HIV infection, hepatitis and Ebola. And when the next major influenza pandemic comes along with similar mortality rates to those seen in 1918-19 when more than 100 million people died, it will only be possible to check its course by vaccination.

As a viral epidemiologist I lecture on the science behind all this, but put simply vaccination is a no-brainer, unless of course you still believe in witch doctors rather than experienced scientists and doctors. Oh, one last point - the most recent research shows that measles infection destroys the immune memory of previous infections by other infectious diseases, thus rendering the individual susceptible to those diseases again.

Seconding what the Magnificent one said, thank you, Keith. Those who actively campaign AGAINST vaccination, based on lies, false news stories and social media propaganda which they propagate are infuriating, and they are close to being criminally responsible.
Those of us with family members still in school are extremely upset with anti-vaxers who willfully put their health at risk by not having their own children vaccinated. As far as I'm concerned, ALL schools should refuse entry to families who can't verify their vaccination records. I'm a hard-liner when it comes to protecting children and these folks who subscribe to the notion that they know better than the scientific community need to be re-educated.
I hope this is also keeping in the spirit of your post, Keith...

Keith, this is so very important. I am so glad you posted this. I also noticed that you in charge of the polio eradication program for the world - are doing a magnificent job of getting funding to make sure the vaccinations go on everywhere.
Thank you...

And also let's address the issue of zoo-viruses spread between species.

There is a reason why these viruses spread from China... Open air markets stack animals of different species and allow for transmission of viruses. Live animals are stacked on top of one another with no regard for disease transmission. Viruses spread and mutate. It's only a matter of time before a virus wipes out humans.

And please don't tag me with the title of cultural insensitivity. You can not lock up dogs, bats and salamanders and sell them to people as meat if you have any basic knowledge of microbiology.

This has long been an issue with me, and I expect more pandemics to occur in the future.

The storage of animals for human consumption is a breeding ground for viruses. We can't do this anymore.

Thanks for the good info, Keith. In my circle of family and friends, we’re big believers in herd immunity.

And now?

Actually, anyone who was following the news out of China knew something. That was posted on January 25, 2020 at which point the Wuhan outbreak was underway, though no one really believed it would escalate the way it did.

But, yeah, in retrospect Keith's original post was somewhat prescient and is even better advice today than when he posted it.

Can she find the silence again?

I required all my employees to get Covid vaccinated. Two Trump supporters quit. Good riddance.

Here in the UK, all NHS staff are now required to be double vaccinated by April '22 or lose their jobs. I can't believe that anyone in the medical profession would even consider not being vaccinated! That truly is incredibly selfish.
