I don't know if you'd call it nice, but it was the kindest thing we could do.
A zebra was caught in a snare on a neighboring ranch. It got free and managed to somehow get through our perimeter electric fence, probably through fear of the hyena, triggering the alarms which sent our people to investigate. They lost the tracks in the thick bush so backtracked to the neighboring ranch where they found the snare; a piece of fencing wire attatched to a log that was buried 4ft in the ground along a wildlife path. All around were the tracks of hyena, jackel and the unfortunate zebra as well as skin and flesh in the snare. Last night one of the camera traps captured the zebra at a water hole so with that information it was tracked and monitored until a vet got here. Once it was darted we were able to see that from the cannon bone the skin was gone leaving just some shredded tendons and the bone. From the fetlock down, the hoof was also gone. Its hind quarters and stomach had tears in the flesh, evidence of hyena bites. It was decided to put him the sleep perminantly. Poor fellow, but a far kinder fate than being ambushed by hyena.

Find that bastard... put him in the snare... and leave him for the hyenas...

The other nice thing I did today was run a block to give the mailman a piece of mis-delivered mail.
Gave my wife my last spoonful of chili.
Started some tortilla soup in the slow cooker. I'm having some friends over later tonight.
Was at the store buying milk and juice. There were three children ahead of me at the checkout, getting two baguettes they had been sent to buy for lunch. They didn't have quite enough money, I gave the cashier the 13 centimes shortfall.

Poor kids, I really felt for them. They were clearly upset they did not have enough change for the bread. Very polite, they thanked me nicely.
Let my wife interrupt my TV show so she could watch her TV show...
Gave up my share of the bbq ribs.

Had fun playing Forum Games with a lovely Lady
Last night My son called shortly before midnight. A water pipe had burst in his boiler. I dressed and went to his house (about two miles away) and quickly ascertained that it was a simple repair. I shut off the water and today went and bought him a new pipe and fitted it.
It is the simple things like this that make being a parent to two grown children such a joy.

Spent quality time with my family
Today I took my 34 year old son to Hospital for an operation on his hand under general anaesthetic.
I was up at 5am and spent the day waiting at the hospital until he was released around 3pm.
It wasn't all bad, though. I got to spend some 6 hours in peaceful solitude with my laptop working on my latest chapter!

Today, The railway on which the 1970 movie, 'The Railway Children' was filmed, reopened after the lockdown. I travelled the line to do my bit to help them recover.

A brief history:

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway was saved from closure by the British Railways board, and opened as an historic line in 1968. It is the only, complete branch line preserved in the UK. (Maybe, even, the world?)

Since that time it has run every weekend and summer weekdays, without fail, until March 2020.

It took a global pandemic to close it down.

Because of the lack of revenue, they came very near to shutting-down for good but, thanks to the efforts of their fundraising campaigns and a surprise beneficiary, they have survived.

The amazing good fortune was that the Main line Railway needed somewhere to store a fleet of obsolete trains until they could be disposed of and so, they paid the K&WVR to store them on their track whilst they were unused.

Maybe there is a moral here. Even when things are bleak, you never know what salvation may be just around the corner.
