Old As Dirt Quiz

I had this quiz on SS several years ago and thought maybe new members would like a try.

Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom.

1. Blackjack chewing gum

4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles
5. Coffee shops or diners with tableside jukeboxes
6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines on the telephone
8. Newsreels before the movie
9. P.F. Flyers
10. Butch wax
11. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels... if you were fortunate)

I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

18. Mimeograph paper - Mom was a church secretary in the eighties and was still using a Gestetner mimeograph machine to do service bulletin and newsletters. It was replaced with a laser copier/printer in the nineties, I think. I used them in school a few times, too.

23. Drive-ins - there was one not far from my home until, IIRC, the eighties

There's quite a few items on there that were still around in the 70s so I scored a 13. Marked the ones I knew in bold. I did add some nostalgic notes to a few in italics.

For changing the scoring, you would probably have to work out percentages and translate those into ranges. Since it's all in good fun, probably too much work.

Yeesh, all these old people on here (yeah, I am kind of included in that). So how many of you remember or had 78 rpm records? We had a few in the house but they were Mom and Dad's and dated back to their youth.

I played 78s, 45s, and 33 vinyls.

You can't get there from here, because when you get there you're still here and here is now there.

It is interesting how vinyl came back into demand there a couple decades ago and still is to some degree. You have major acts doing limited edition vinyl releases and stuff. I've even heard of 78s being released, which is bizarre since even in my childhood, some record players no longer supported that speed. I had 45 singles and 33 1/3 albums but, as I said, the 78s were all old ones belonging to my parents. Later I started buying mostly cassettes for portability.

I have a nice HiFi separates set up and have begun buying vinyl once again.
I remember that the first LP I bought was Billion Dollar Babies in 1972 It cost £2.45.
The last Lp I bought was The Bonding by Edenbridge. It cost ten times that!
It is true, the sound produced by a vinyl disc does seem to have more depth and clarity.

Pocket combs and Brylcream I know.

Rolled up shirt sleeves, I still do (my arms hate being covered unless it's seriously cold).

Transistor radios I dearly miss. Even had one that mounted on the handlebars of my bike.

We had 48 at the cottage (maybe still do for all I know). Actually, we had that type on the back door and a modern aluminum screen door going on to the enclosed porch/dining room.

And I do so miss TV Guide. My parents subscribed. Coming home each week to look at what was coming up on favorite shows, what movies were going to be on, and so on was a part of my childhood/youth. And those Fall Preview issues where you got to see what was coming up in the new season.
